Description:
Circuit breaker protection and diagnostics system

The subject of the invention is the breaker protection and diagnostics system intended for protection purposes in a medium voltage switchgear and performing the diagnostics function of a medium voltage circuit breaker on the basis of signals available during operation.

The systems providing the protection functionality in a medium voltage switchgear are known, such as REF 541, REF 542, REF 543. Such systems comprise the electrical signals acquisition module connected to the signal parameterization system, the output of which in turn is connected to the protections module, the output of which is connected to the decision module and the transmission module. On the basis of current and voltage measurements in a three-phase line, these systems implement the protective automation algorithms, but are unable to perform the circuit breaker analysis based on the signals, such as phase currents or voltages during normal operation.

There are also specialized modules acquiring signals from the circuit breaker during normal operation in order to provide circuit breaker diagnostics. Such systems, comprising the electrical signals acquisition module connected to the decision module and the transmission module, have been described, amongst others, by M. Kezunovic, Z. Ren, G. Latisko, D. R. Sevcik, S. Lucey, W.E. Cook, E.A. Koch, Automated Monitoring and Analysis of Circuit Breaker Operation, IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, Vol. 20, Issue 3. These systems, on the other hand, are unable to implement the protection algorithms in the switchgear. There are also specialized circuit breaker diagnostics systems comprising the electrical signals acquisition module connected to the signal parameterization system connected to the decision module. With these systems, the diagnostics operation can be performed only when the circuit breaker is disconnected from the power line because the special test signals are used for diagnostics. An example of these devices is TM1800 from General Electric.

According to the invention, the circuit breaker protection and diagnostics system includes the non-electrical signals acquisition module, the input of which is connected to the circuit breaker's non-electric signals sensor; one output is connected to the comparator module and the other one to the transmission module, the output of which is connected to the system output. The other comparator module input is connected to the non-electric diagnostics signals reference standard module. One of the comparator module outputs is connected to the decision module, the output of which is connected to the circuit breaker control system. The other comparator module output is connected to the transmission module, the second input of which is connected to the output of the electrical signals acquisition module, and the third one is connected to the output of the protection module. The second output of the protection module is connected to the input of the decision module, and the input is connected to the output of the signals parameterization module to the input of which connected is the second output of the electrical signals acquisition module. Outputs of the voltage transformers are connected to the voltage inputs of the electrical signals acquisition module. Outputs of the current transformers are connected to the current inputs, and the circuit breaker binary signals are sent to the binary inputs.

The electrical signals acquisition module converts analogue signals related to the circuit breaker into sequences of digital samples and prepares the records comprising the digital samples and binary signals. These records are sent to the transmission module which in turn sends them out, for example to the master system. Samples of voltage and current signals are sent to the signals parameterization module where the basic parameters of voltage and current signals are determined, such as Fourier spectrum, RMS values, mains frequency, and then the determined values are sent to the protection module which implements the protective automation functions. The protection module sends the information about the protections status to the decision module. The non-electrical signals acquisition module converts the non-electrical diagnostic signals (i.e. infrared and visible spectrum emitted by heated contacts) to digital format which is sent to the comparator module where it is compared with the digital reference standard of non-electrical diagnostic signals stored in the diagnostics signals reference standard module.

The advantage of the system lies in the fact that it performs the protective automation functions and diagnostics of medium voltage circuit breaker on the basic of the same samples of electrical signals available from the circuit breaker and additionally widens the circuit breaker diagnostics to include the non-electrical signals by comparing them with a digital reference standard.

Example

According to the invention, the system comprises the electrical signals acquisition module ESAM, to voltage inputs U3 of which connected are the outputs of voltage transformers TU, to the current inputs U2 the outputs of current transformers TI are connected, and to the binary inputs U4 the binary signals WDW of the circuit breaker CB are connected. One of the outputs of the electrical signals acquisition module ESAM is connected to one of the inputs of the transmission module TM, and the second output is connected to the signals parameterization module SPM, the output of which is connected to the protection module PM. One of the outputs of the protection module PM is connected to the transmission module TM, and the other one to the decision module DM, the output of which is connected to the output U5 of the system, and this output is in turn connected to the control system CS of the circuit breaker CB. The output of the transmission module TM is connected to the output U6 of the system. The input of the non-electrical signals acquisition module NESAM is connected to the input Ul, to which connected is the non-electrical signals sensor NSS of the circuit breaker CB. One of the outputs of the non-electrical signals acquisition module NESAM is connected to the transmission module TM, and the other to the comparator module CM, the second output of which is connected to the output of the non-electric diagnostics signals reference standard module NDSRSM. One of the outputs of the comparator module is connected to the transmission module TM, and the other one to the decision module DM.
