Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a circularly-polarized-light input/output device that makes it possible to configure a compact, multi-input/multi-output light switch. [Solution] A circularly-polarized-light input/output device according to the present invention includes: a first polarization diffraction grating that diffracts, when circularly polarized light slanted at angles of +θ and -θ with respect to a thickness direction is incident thereon, the circularly polarized light in the thickness direction before outputting the circularly polarized light; a liquid-crystal polarization rotating element that outputs the circularly polarized light, incident from the first polarization diffraction grating in a direction parallel to the thickness direction, in either a state wherein the rotation direction thereof is reversed or a state wherein the rotation direction thereof is maintained, in the direction parallel to the thickness direction; a second polarization diffraction grating that diffracts the circularly polarized light, incident from the liquid-crystal polarization rotating element in the direction parallel to the thickness direction, in a direction inclined at an angle of either +θ or -θ with respect to the direction parallel to the thickness direction in accordance with the rotation direction before outputting the circularly polarized light; and a circularly-polarized-light irradiation unit that irradiates the first polarization diffraction grating with the circularly polarized light from the direction inclined at the angle of either +θ or -θ with respect to the direction parallel to the thickness direction.
