Description:
Clamp Foot Air Jet Apparatus

The invention relates to a clamp foot air jet apparatus including a clamp foot assembly for plate cutting machines in profile cutting machines including flame and plasma cutting machines. The invention is directed particularly but not solely towards a servo clamp foot to move coolant and chips.

Background of Invention

In this specification unless the contrary is expressly stated, where a document, act or item of knowledge is referred to or discussed, this reference or discussion is not an admission that the document, act or item of knowledge or any combination thereof was at the priority date, publicly available, known to the public, part of common general knowledge; or known to be relevant to an attempt to solve any problem with which this specification is concerned.

Normally on flame and plasma cutting machines having a bridge, the bridge is fitted with multiple tooling such as oxy fuel torches, plasma torches and marking heads and can also be fitted with machining heads such as drilling and milling heads. Each cutting tool currently uses their own lifter mechanism on a common carriage which is redundant when that tool type is not required. Machines that incorporate plasma cutting and oxy fuel cutting with machining heads usually require some sort of coolant to be applied to the machining head. Additionally when these machining heads are being used they generate metal chips from the drilling and other machining operations.

One method to remove the coolant and chip waste is by using a containment area around the machining tool to limit the spread of the coolant and chips over the plate being cut.

Connected to this containment area can be connected a vacuum system to such the chips and coolant away from this area.

The problem with this is that the air flow generated by the vaccum is often not sufficient to remove the coolant and chips sitting the surface of the plate. The problem is that coolant and chips sitting on the surface of the plate do not get evacuated during the machining process.

The clamp foot 2 includes a vertical leg portion 3 slidably joined to or connected to or formed including the clamp foot air jet apparatus 1. The vertical leg 3 is operatively connected to a plate cutting machine which allows the vertical leg portion 3 with the clamp foot air jet apparatus 1 to at least slide vertically on a similarly vertical support 3 a in accordance with any manual or automatic cutting instructions.

The clamp foot apparatus 1 includes a clamp foot assembly. In use the leg portion 3 is oriented substantially vertically and is operatively connected to a movable carriage (not shown) with cutting torches (not shown), of afore mentioned plate cutting machine and has an upper end and lower end. Clamp foot apparatus 1 is located at one end ie at the lower end of the clamp foot 1 as seen in figure 1. The clamp foot assembly is oriented substantially horizontally and is adapted to hold a plate on a cutting table (not shown) to be cut underneath the clamp foot assembly. As shown, clamp foot assembly is horizontally oriented when in use, and includes an outer ring shaped member 4 having a central aperture 5 and an inner ring shaped member 6 having a central aperture 7. Both central apertures 5 and 7 can be contiguous and/or adjacent each other. Inner ring shaped member 6 is formed as a separate member to the outer ring member 6 and is sealing engaged by sealmg means to the outer ring 4 which can be made to be removable or not. Inner ring member 6 is able to be removed and/or replaced as required. Outer ring shaped member 4 as seen in figures 1-4

The outer ring shaped member 4 of the clamp foot assembly has a planar shaped body with an upper planar surface 8 and lower planar surface 9 with an outer curved edge 10 and inner curved edge 11. Inner curved edge 1 1 borders the central aperture 5 and is shaped having different shapes on each side of the clamp foot apparatus 1 (see figures 2 and 3) whereby as shown on the left of Section A-A inner curve edge 11 is simply a vertical wall or as shown on the right of Section A-A there can be a stepped formation which includes an upper angled wall portion 12 and lower recessed groove portion whereby the lower recessed groove portion is made up of a horizontal recessed part 14 leading to a vertical curved recess wall part 15 (forming a corner) at a base thereof of the lower recessed groove portion which in use meet lower surface 9 and cutting table. Lower recessed groove though the surfaces are planar they do have part of the sealing means which includes suitable grooves like for example first and second seal grooves 28 and 29. Outer curved edge 10 is as shown, can be substantially vertical in orientation being at right angles to upper surface 8 and lower surface 9 but as shown in figure 2 outer curved edge 10 can be formed as non curved edges forming overall a square shape.

Inner ring shaped member 6 - Figures 5-7

As shown in figure 7 the entry end can have an entrance section 26a of a larger diameter or depth than the depth of the hole 26. In plan view hole 26 can be angled at any angle to the inner curved edge 22.

Also as part of the sealing means, as an example, inner ring shaped member 6 can also comprise a first seal groove or chamfer 28 located at a top of the outer curved edge 21 and a second seal groove 29 located below and spaced from the first seal groove 28 as seen in figures 3 and 4. First seal groove 28 is a bevel to enable locating a O ring 28 into the corner formed with 4. Similarly second groove 29 is also curved in shape. There is also a hole entrance 26a for groove 24 for receiving air, located between the first and second seal grooves 28 & 29 which can be formed in any cross section such as for example as a square groove (any shape is possible).

When the inner ring member 6 is slidably interfitted with the outer ring member 4, all of the grooves 28, 29 & 9a are then enclosed and aligned, in that first seal groove or chamfer 28 is bordered by the corner of the inner curved edge 14 and second seal groove 29 and tunnel entrance groove 30 are bordered by the inner vertical wall edge 21.

A sealing means 32 can be located within the enclosed and aligned seal grooves 28, 29 which includes for example sealant or at least one O ring whereby the inner ring 6 is fluidly sealed to the outer ring 4.
