A coin identification device (10) has a first camera (100A) for imaging one surface of a coin and a second camera (100B) disposed on the downstream side of the first camera (100A) in a coin path. The first camera (100A) and the second camera (100B) are disposed on different transport path surfaces to image respective surfaces of the coin for imaging both of the surfaces (the front surface and the rear surface) of the coin. The second camera (100B) is provided with a group of high angle LEDs (121) and a group of low angle LEDs (122) which emit light beams having different incident angles of their optical axes to the coin to be identified. The coin identification device (10) controls the light-emitting quantities of respective groups of light sources emitted by the second camera (100B) according to brightness at the predetermined portion of an image captured by the first camera (100A).
