Abstract:
A collapsible steering column assembly comprises: a mounting bracket which comprises a pair of arms facing each other, and which is formed such that the same can be fixed to a chassis; a support housing which is fastened to the mounting bracket to be able to tilt, and which is installed to extend between the pair of arms; a steering column installed to penetrate the support housing such that the steering column can make a telescopic behavior with regard to the support housing and can make a tilt behavior together with the support housing; and a locking device configured to selectively remain in a locked condition or in a released condition such that, by selectively applying a clamping force to the pair of arms, the steering column is allowed to selectively make the telescopic behavior or the tilting behavior. The steering column comprises an outer jacket and an inner jacket inserted into the outer jacket to be able to slide. The inner jacket is configured to slide inside the support housing together with the outer jacket when the steering column makes the telescopic behavior in the released condition of the locking device. The inner jacket is configured such that the same can collapse into the outer jacket when an impact is applied to the steering column in the locked condition of the locking device. The locking device is configured to be able to selectively allow a movement in the direction of the telescopic behavior of the outer jacket through coupling of teeth, which selectively mesh or disengage according to the locked condition and the released condition. Two locking teeth that constitute the coupling of teeth are configured to have a clearance therebetween such that, when the locking device is in the locked condition, the outer jacket can move by a predetermined length in the direction of the telescopic behavior.
