In this collision prevention system a control device defines a degree of collision risk X which, as the numerical value thereof increases, indicates a greater likelihood that a following vehicle will collide with the host vehicle due to the behavior of the host vehicle, and defines a proximity Pr which, as the numerical value thereof increases, indicates a lesser distance between the host vehicle and the following vehicle or a greater relative speed between the vehicles. Furthermore, when the relationship between the amount of change ΔX/Δt in the degree of collision risk X and a threshold value Kxa is Kxa ≤ ΔX/Δt, the control device changes a first threshold value Kpr for the proximity Pr to a lower second threshold value Kpr', and on the condition that the relationship between the degree of collision risk X and a threshold value Kx is Kx ≤ X and the relationship between the proximity Pr and the second threshold value Kpr' is Kpr' ≤ Pr, the control device operates a warning device.
