This invention relates to a combustion chamber structure of a direct-injection diesel engine which has a downwardly-recessed cavity (10) in the apical surface of a piston (9), and inside of the cavity (10), fuel is injected in a radial pattern from the center of a cylinder ceiling portion for autoignition. A cut-out section (20) forms a step on the outer periphery of the opening of the cavity (10), said step being recessed to a prescribed depth relative to the apical surface of the piston (9), and the cut-out section (20) comprises a guide surface (20a) which, outwards in the radial direction, gradually increases in height and then rises to form a concave shape. An entrance lip (22) is formed in a position a step down from the apical surface of the piston (9) and is configured by the inner peripheral section of the bottom surface of the cut-out section (20) and the combustion chamber wall surface (21) rising from the bottom surface of the cavity (10). In the outer periphery of the cut-out section (20), a shelf section (23) is recessed from the apical surface of the piston (9) but not as deep as the step of the cut-out section (20), configuring a step.
