Description

Title of Invention: A COMMON LIGHT MODULE FOR

DECORATIVE EXTERNAL LIGHTING STRUCTURES

Technical Field

[1] The present invention relates generally to a wall mounted basic light module, with or without a motion and/or dusk activation sensor. It specifically relates to a common light module fully assembled from said basic light module, a main frame and a thermally conductive cover, whereas such a fully assembled common light module is attached with selected decorative external lighting structures orientated to assume a portrait or a landscape position.

Background Art

[2] Currently, there are many patents on motion or dusk activation lighting apparatus, infrared intrusion detection apparatus, infrared detection system, passive infrared alarm device and the like. For an example, United States Patent Number 4,873,469 discloses a switch assembly actuated by passive infrared radiation for operating a light in a space. A person moves within the sensing field of the switch assembly, the sensing element is connected to a control circuit which responsively turns on the light, maintains the light on while the person remains in the space, and turns the light off automatically when the person leaves the space. The basic light module is preferably a motion and/or dusk activation light module which includes a lens assembly, at least one passive infrared sensor, a power printed circuit board, a passive infrared printed circuit board, at least one light source, a heat sink and associated electrical circuitry.

[3] It is important to note that there are several variations of lighting apparatus or light module, such as a motion or dusk activation light module; and a light module without any such sensor. There are also various kinds of light employed, such as light emitting diode light, incandescent light, or fluorescent light. It is not the intention of this present invention to claim the known motion and/or dusk activation technologies, as well as the known lighting technology.

[4] The choice of external lighting structures in these prior art patents is rather limited and restricted for illumination purpose only. Floodlights or spotlights are two common lighting structures. In this present invention, decorative external lighting structures are attached to a common lighting apparatus or a common light module comprising a basic light module, a main frame and a thermally conductive cover. These decorative external lighting structures are substantially transparent or translucent enclosures made of preferably plastic material, so that light from the common light module is diffused therein. [5] Currently, some decorative external lighting structures are available in the market.

There are a wide range of decorative external lighting structures such as bulkhead panel, reflector panel, house number light panel and so on. The present invention allows these decorative external lighting structures of various designs to be attached to the common light module. Furthermore, the common light module is available as a single common light module or a twin common light module.

Summary of the Invention

[6] The present invention has therefore as a primary object to allow selected decorative external lighting structures of various designs to be attached to a common light module.

[7] Another object of the present invention is to allow decorative external lighting

structures to be attached selectively and orientated to assume a portrait or a landscape position.

[8] The other object of the present invention is to allow for at least one light emission from the common light module.

[9] All these objects are achieved in which a main frame is attached to the front side of a basic light module and a thermally conductive cover as a heat sink is attached to the front side of the main frame. A common light module is fully assembled from the basic light module, the main frame and the thermally conductive cover. The present invention also incorporates a bayonet mechanism. At least one decorative external lighting structure is attached to the top and/or bottom side of the main frame. With the rotation and locking action of the bayonet mechanism, the decorative external lighting structure can be orientated to assume a portrait or a landscape position. At least one light is emitted from the common light module to illuminate the decorative external lighting structure.

Disclosure of Invention

Detailed Description of the Invention

[28] It is important to note that variations of basic light module (30) are included in the teaching of the present invention. For an example, a basic light module (30) can be equipped with or without motion and/or dusk activation sensor. The basic light module (30) with a motion and/or dusk activation sensor is automatically activated. When the basic light module (30) is not equipped with any motion and/or dusk activation sensor, it is switched on manually. For another example, the light emitted from the basic light module (30) can be a light emitting diode light, or a fluorescent light or an in- candescent light.

[29] Referring to Figures la to Id, various views of a common light module (100)

according to the present invention are illustrated. When fully assembled, the common light module (100) looks like two staggered boxes, the front box (50) being larger than the rear box (60). For the present disclosure, each box (50, 60) is substantially square.

[30] As seen in Figure 2a, the common light module (100) in accordance to the present invention is essentially constructed from three elements, namely a basic light module (30), a main frame (20), and a thermally conductive cover (10). The basic light module (30) is substantially the square rear box (60); whereas the main frame (20) and the thermally conductive cover (10) are assembled to form substantially the larger square front box (50). The thermally conductive cover (10) serves also as a heat sink when assembled to the front side of the main frame (20).

[31] The basic light module (30) can be a motion and/or dusk activation light module. A lens assembly, including a lens (33) and a lens cap (31), protrude through an opening (11) at the center of the thermally conductive cover (10) being the front side of the front box (50). The lens cap (31) is above the lens (33). A first circular ring (81) with a plurality of protruding or catch means (83) equi-distantly spaced apart around its circumference, being one part of a bayonet mechanism (80), is disposed on the front side of the basic light module (30).

[32] The main frame (20) is essentially a box with open front and back sides. The top or bottom side of the main frame (20) is disposed with a light exit opening (23). A light source is disposed next adjacent to the light exit opening (23). Electrical circuitry is not elaborated because it is well known. The back side of the main frame (20) is disposed with a second circular ring (82) with a plurality of receiver means (84) correspondingly disposed around its circumference, being another part of the bayonet mechanism (80). A heat sink is required for the light source. The front side of the main frame (20) carries at least one heat sink plate (24) which is designed to be in contact with the thermally conductive cover (10).

[33] The two circular rings (81, 82) constitute the bayonet mechanism (80) which is a known technology and does not require further elaborate explanation. Through a rotation and locking action of the bayonet mechanism (80), the main frame (20) is rotatably attached to the basic light module (30).

[34] The main frame (20) is attached to the front side of the basic light module (30) with the assistance of the bayonet mechanism (80). The thermally conductive cover (10) is attached to the front side of the main frame (20). The thermally conductive cover (10) is preferably made of aluminium material or plastic material. Since the thermally conductive cover (10) is in contact with the heat sink plate (24), the thermally conductive cover (10) also serves as a heat sink. [35] Selected decorative external lighting structures (71 to 76) of various designs are first attached to the top and/or bottom side of the main frame (20), then rotated to and locked in a landscape position when required. It is to be noted that the common light module (100) is common for said decorative external lighting structures (71 to 76) of various designs.

[36] Referring to Figure 2b, various components in relative positions ready for assembly into the common light module (100) are illustrated. Besides the main frame (20) and the thermally conductive cover (10), the basic light module (30) carries various components, namely a lens cap (31), a female wire connector (32), a lens assembly, a gasket (34), at least one passive infrared sensor (43), a wall plate box (35), a passive infrared printed circuit board (36), a power printed circuit board (37), a terminal block (38), a wall plate rear plate (39), a ground wire connector (41) and a wire gasket (42). This motion activation technology is not a subject of the present invention and it will not be further elaborated.

[37] Referring to Figures 3a, 3b, and 3c, a decorative external lighting structure is illuminated in a single light situation. A portrait bulkhead panel (71), a reflector panel (72), or a house number light panel (73) is attached to the top side of the main frame (20). A single light is emitted from the common light module (100) to illuminate said decorative external lighting structure (71, 72, 73).

[38] Referring to Figure 3d, one light source (21) such as a light emitting diode is

disposed next adjacent to the light exit opening (23) at the top side of the main frame (20). At least one heat sink plate (24) acts as a substrate to the light source (21). The heat sink plate (24) is designed to come in contact with the thermally conductive cover (10) which also serves as a heat sink.

[39] Referring to Figures 4a, 4b, and 4c, two decorative external lighting structures (74, 75, 76) are illuminated in a twin light situation. Two linear bulkhead panels (74) are disposed in a landscape position as in Figure 4a. Two round bulkhead panels (75), as well as two elongated light panels (76) are respectively attached to the top and the bottom sides of the main frame (20) as in Figures 4b and 4c.

[40] Referring to Figure 4d, two lights are emitted from the common light module (100) to illuminate said two decorative external lighting structures (74, 75, 76). The top and bottom sides of the main frame (20) are disposed each with a light exit opening (23). A light source (21) such as a light emitting diode is disposed next adjacent to each light exit opening (23). Thus, two lights are emitted and diffuse into the attached decorative external lighting structures (74, 75, 76). Two heat sink plates (24) act as substrates to the light sources (21). The heat sink plates (24) are designed to come in contact with the thermally conductive cover (10) which also serves as a heat sink.

[41] Each decorative external lighting structure (74, 75, 76) is attached to the top and/or bottom side of the main frame (20). One known technique will be to provide two horizontal slots (22) on the top and/or bottom side of the main frame (20) and to provide engagement means correspondingly on the decorative external lighting structure (74, 75, 76). Attachment is achieved when the engagement means are placed therein the horizontal slots (22). This known attachment technique will not be elaborated in this description.

[42] A bayonet mechanism (80) with a rotation and locking action will be explained in Figures 5a and 5b. Referring to Figure 5a, one part of the bayonet mechanism (80) takes the form of a first circular ring (81) on the front side of the basic light module (30). There are at least four protruding or catch means (83) equi-distantly spaced apart around the circumference of the first circular ring (81). Referring to Figure 5b, another part of the bayonet mechanism (80) takes the form of a second circular ring (82). There are correspondingly at least four receiver means (84) on the second circular ring (82). The second circular ring (82) is disposed on the corresponding back side of the main frame (20) being part of the front box (50). The decorative external lighting structure, the thermally conductive cover (10) and the main frame (20) are first assembled. The main frame (20), attached with the thermally conductive cover (10) and the decorative external lighting structure, is then rotatably orientated to assume a portrait or a landscape position relative to the basic light module (30). The receiver means (84) on the second circular ring (82) at the back side of the main frame (20) engages the protruding or catch means (83) on the first circular ring (81) in a locking action.

[43] Referring to Figure 6, the bayonet mechanism (80) is applied to the basic light

module (30), and the front box (50) comprising the thermally conductive cover (10) and the main frame (20) attached with two side bulkhead panels (74). The principle of working is substantially the same and will not be elaborated further. The bayonet mechanism (80) itself is a well-known technology.

[44] A consequence of attaching decorative external lighting structures (71 to 76) to the main frame (20) of a common light module (100) is that heat generated by the light source (21) may be excessive. False alarms may be caused consequently. It is advantageous to insulate the lens (33) in the lens assembly with a rim.
