Provided are a communication device and method in which optimal communication parameters are set in accordance with the type of a communication partner device and then communication is carried out. A captured image from a camera is analyzed, the type of the communication partner device is identified from the captured image, an optimal communication mode is determined on the basis of the result of identifying the identified communication partner device, and near-field communication with the communication partner device is carried out in the determined communication mode. The communication device acquires the optimal parameters corresponding with the type of the communication partner device from a storage unit or an external server. For example, communication parameters such as a Q value for a communication signal, load modulation (amplitude/phase), an input magnetic field, a response threshold value, a resonant frequency, a reception filter characteristic, an optimal control setting for active load modulation (ALM), and an optimal strength for an output signal, etc., are acquired and applied to a communication process which is carried out.
