The present technology relates to a communication device and method and a communication system, which make it possible to perform communication control depending on the gain of an antenna element. Provided is a communication device that performs wireless communication via an antenna element, wherein: the state of gain of the antenna element is detected; on the basis of the detected state of gain of the antenna element, a carrier sensing threshold value is controlled, and carrier sensing is performed; it is determined whether communication is possible using the set threshold value; and if communication is found to be possible, wireless communication is performed. The present disclosure can be applied, for example, to transmission devices, reception devices, transceivers, communication devices, electronic devices, computers, programs, storage mediums, and systems.
