Abstract:
There is provided a computer-implemented method for predicting commutation failures, so as to prevent commutation failures from occurring, at an inverter side valve group (35, 36) of a Line-Commutated Converter based High Voltage Direct Current (LCC HVDC) system (10), during an occurrence of a fault in a connection (40) between an Alternating Current (AC) system (31) and an inverter side AC bus (32) of the LCC HVDC system, the fault being on a phase (54, 56, 58) of the connection. The method comprises: determining a AC bus commutation voltage, for each phase of the AC bus; calculating a voltage time integral required by the LCC HVDC system for successful commutation; calculating, based on the determined AC bus commutation voltages, a minimum voltage time integral provided by the AC system; comparing the minimum voltage time integral provided by the AC system with the voltage time integral required by the LCC HVDC system; and determining whether a commutation failure will occur based on the comparison.
