This disclosure relates to a comparator, an AD converter, a solid-state image pickup device, an electronic apparatus, and a method for controlling a comparator which enable a reduction in power consumption while improving the determination speed of the comparator. A comparator is provided with a comparison unit, a positive feedback circuit, and a current limiting unit. The comparator compares the voltages of an input signal and a reference signal and outputs a comparison result signal. The positive feedback circuit increases a transition speed when the comparison result signal is inverted. The current limiting unit limits a current that flows to the comparison unit after the comparison result signal is inverted. This disclosure is applicable, for example, to a comparator and the like.
