Abstract:
The present invention relates to a composition comprising ciclesonide or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an effective ingredient for suppressing the growth of cancer stem cells, a pharmaceutical composition comprising the same composition for suppressing cancer metastasis or treating or preventing cancer, and a food composition. In the present invention, ciclesonide suppresses the growth of breast cancer and lung cancer cells and inhibits the formation of breast cancer and lung cancer stem cells. In addition, ciclesonide was found to suppress the expression of self-renewal genes, such as Nanog, C-myc, Oct4, Sox2, Snail, and CD44, which are known to be expressed specifically in breast cancer and lung cancer stem cells, interfere with the production of IL-6 and IL-8, which are known to be involved in the mammosphere formation of breast cancer stem cells and the tumorsphere formation of lung cancer stem cells, and inhibit the STAT3 signaling pathway. Accordingly, the compound suppresses the growth of stem cells of cancer, such as breast cancer and lung cancer and the growth of such cancer, thus finding applications in the therapy of cancer, such as breast cancer and lung cancer.
