Abstract:
The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention or treatment of arthritis, the composition containing a Sargassum serratifolium extract as an active ingredient. The Sargassum serratifolium extract according to the present invention has excellent activity to reduce or inhibit the activity of IL-1β, IL-6, or TNF-a, which is an inflammatory cytokine, and has an excellent effect of alleviating arthritis in an arthritis animal model, and thus the extract can be advantageously used as a composition for the treatment of arthritis. In addition, the extract according to the present invention causes neither cytotoxicity nor drug toxicity and side effects, and thus, the extract can be safely used even when taken for a long period of time, and has a stable effect even in the body.
