Abstract:
This compression ignition internal combustion engine is provided with a cylinder block, a cylinder head, a piston containing a cavity that demarcates a combustion chamber by means of the cylinder block and cylinder head, and a nozzle that injects fuel into the combustion chamber. The cavity contains: a protruding section that protrudes towards the nozzle; a bottom surface that is formed in the periphery of the protruding section; and an open surface and reentrant surface that are contiguous with the bottom surface. The open surface has a depth that becomes shallower towards the outside in the radial direction of the piston; the distance from the nozzle to the open surface is longer than the distance from the nozzle to the reentrant surface; the height position in the direction of the piston central axis of the edge between the bottom surface and the open surface is lower than the height position in the direction of the direction of the central axis of the edge between the bottom surface and the reentrant surface; and the nozzle injects a first and second fuel mist respectively towards the open surface and the reentrant surface.
