This hydraulic excavator 1 comprises: a lower traveling body 2 including a chassis 30 that has a pair of side surface plates 36 provided with a gap therebetween in the vehicle lateral direction, has a cylindrical body 35 on a top surface plate 32 and functioning as an attaching part for an upper revolving body 6 comprising a work device 10, and has a first opening 341 in a bottom surface plate 34; and an electric motor M that functions as a travel drive source and is mounted on the lower traveling body. The hydraulic excavator 1 comprises a battery assembly 50 having a plurality of batteries B that supply power to the electric motor M, and a base cover 51 that has the plurality of batteries B mounted thereon, said battery assembly 50 having the plurality of batteries accommodated, through the first opening 341, in an internal space V of the chassis 30 delimited between the pair of side surface plates 36, and having the base cover 51 attached to the chassis 30.
