A device and a method are disclosed for compressing empty containers, preferably PET bottles (F). The device comprises an adapter (10) with a receptacle (13) into which a bottle neck with a partially unscrewed cap (D) can be introduced. At least one sealing means (11, 12) is concentrically arranged in the zone of an insertion opening (20) and the receptacle (13) communicates with a venting opening (30). When air is aspirated out of the receptacle through the venting opening (30), a negative pressure is generated in the container (F) with a partially unscrewed cap (D), thus reducing the volume of the container to a fraction of its original volume, preferably by the collapsing of its side walls.
