The control device for an engine is equipped with: an intake passage (11) and an exhaust passage (12) connected to a combustion chamber (3); an exhaust gas recirculation device (20) for recirculating a portion of exhaust gas, as exhaust recirculation gas, into the intake passage (11); an intake/exhaust valve control means (31) for controlling opening/closing of an intake valve (8) and an exhaust valve (9); a throttle valve (16) disposed in the intake passage (11); and a throttle valve control means (32) for controlling opening/closing of the throttle valve (16). The device performs knock control such that when in a knock-anticipated operating region where the occurrence of knocking is anticipated at the time of introduction of the exhaust recirculation gas, the valve opening timing of the intake valve (8) is advanced with respect to a standard timing corresponding to the operating condition at that point in time, and the opening degree of the throttle valve (16) is set smaller than a standard opening degree corresponding to the accelerator opening degree at that point in time, thereby increasing the amount of the exhaust recirculation gas to be introduced into the intake passage (11).
