The purpose of the present invention is to prevent a catalyst from being subjected to rich poisoning using a motor when an internal combustion engine is being stopped in a hybrid vehicle. An engine (10) is provided with variable valve mechanisms (36, 38) capable of causing an intake valve (32) and an exhaust valve (34) to be stopped. An electronic control unit (ECU) (50) estimates the poisoned states of catalysts (24, 26), and performs or prohibits valve stopping of the valves (32, 34) on the basis of said poisoned states. Furthermore, when the valve stopping of the valves (32, 34) is prohibited during a fuel cut, the ECU (50) drives a crankshaft (16) of the engine (10) by a motor (60) to idle the engine (10). As a result, even in a hybrid vehicle in which the engine (10) is stopped during a fuel cut, sufficient amount of oxygen can be speedily supplied to the catalysts (24, 26) using a pumping action by a piston (12), and the catalysts (24, 26) can be efficiently recovered from the rich poisoning.
