Abstract:
This control device for an internal combustion engine acquires the temperature of a catalyst having an oxidation function and provided within the exhaust passage, and acquires the amount of oxidation agent in the exhaust air flowing into the catalyst. The amount of oxidation product formed in the catalyst is estimated on the basis of the acquired temperature and the acquired amount of oxidation agent. When the estimated amount of the oxidation product exceeds a prescribed upper limit value, a recovery control is executed in order to remove the oxidation product. Preferably the oxidation agent is NO2, and the oxidation product is a noble metal oxide formed by oxidation of a noble metal in the catalyst.
