Abstract:
The purpose of this invention is to accurately and stably calculate the amount of NOx in exhaust gas, with consideration of the effects of fuel injection timing. An engine (10) is provided with a fuel injection valve (14), an NOx reduction catalyst (30), an engine control unit (ECU) (60), and the like. The ECU (60) calculates the amount of NOx in the exhaust gas on the basis of at least two parameters comprising an injection timing exponent for effective injection, which is fuel injection that contributes to combustion in a cylinder, and an intake-air oxygen-concentration exponent. "Effective injection" is a general term for main injection, after-injection, and pilot injection. In this way, it is possible for the calculated values for NOx concentration to reflect the injection timing of effective injection, which has a high correlation with the amount of NOx produced. Consequently, the NOx amount can be accurately and stably calculated without being impacted by difference between machines, driving conditions, and the like of the internal combustion engine.
