Abstract:
According to the present invention, during driving of a vehicle, when the gear of a stepped transmission is changed while the clutch is disengaged, and the running conditions after engaging the clutch would change considerably, causing the compression ratio after engaging the clutch to considerably decrease, the compression ratio is made to start decreasing before engaging the clutch. That is to say, at the time of a gear change in a state where the compression ratio is set to be comparatively high, if it is detected that the engine load after engaging the clutch would be a prescribed value P or greater, or the engine speed after engaging the clutch would be a prescribed value N or greater, it is determined that the compression ratio after engaging the clutch would considerably decrease, and the compression ratio is made to start decreasing before engaging the clutch.
