Abstract:
In this autonomous vehicle provided with an engine and a controller which controls the operation of the engine, according to a requested driving force for the vehicle, this control method for the autonomous vehicle determines whether to execute a coast stop for automatically stopping the engine during traveling at a prescribed vehicle speed or slower, and sets the requested driving force so as to bring the inter-vehicle distance between the own vehicle and a preceding vehicle to a prescribed distance. In addition, when a preceding vehicle is present, the method predicts the behavior of the preceding vehicle from the circumstances ahead of the preceding vehicle, and, to extend the inter-vehicle distance, prohibits a coast stop for the engine during an automatic stop from being released, when deceleration thereafter of the preceding vehicle is predicted.
