Abstract:
According to this control method, in an internal combustion engine in which a variable valve mechanism is provided on at least an intake side, the operation of the intake side variable valve mechanism is controlled during acceleration. A relational expression between an intake valve timing and a cylinder filling air quantity is calculated in a range in which the intake valve timing can be advanced or retarded from the current value within a predetermined computation cycle. A target filling air quantity, which is the target value of the cylinder filling air quantity during acceleration, is calculated on the basis of the operating state of the internal combustion engine, and the target value of the intake valve timing with respect to the target filling air quantity is calculated in each computation cycle from the calculated relational expression.
