Abstract:
An internal combustion engine (1) is controlled such that speed fluctuations do not exceed a combustion stability limit. The combustion stability limit changes in accordance with the road surface vibration of a vehicle, which vibrates under the influence of the road surface on which said vehicle is travelling. When there is a catalyst warming request to retard the ignition timing in order to warm a catalyst (6), if the road surface vibration is greater than a predetermined threshold, the combustion stability limit is set higher than when the road surface vibration is less than or equal to the predetermined threshold, and the retardation amount of the ignition timing in the catalyst warming request is set higher than when the road surface vibration is less than or equal to the predetermined threshold.
