A control method for a surface cleaning device, and the surface cleaning device. The surface cleaning apparatus is used for performing a cleaning operation and a recovery operation on a surface to be cleaned by means of cleaning liquid. The surface cleaning apparatus comprises a suction source (460), a cleaning base (600), a cleaning liquid storage portion (300), and a recovery storage portion (400). A gas-liquid separation device (420) is provided in the recovery storage portion (400). The gas-liquid separation device (420) is used for performing gas-liquid separation on at least gas and recycled liquid in a suction airflow. The control method comprises: after the gas-liquid separation device (420) is started, a suction source (460) is allowed to be started, such that the cleaning base (600) of the surface cleaning device performs a cleaning operation and a recovery operation on the basis of the suction airflow generated by the suction source (460); and before the gas-liquid separation device (420) is started, the suction source (460) is not allowed to be started.
