Provided is a controller for an automatic transmission which forms a reverse shift stage by turning on a brake (B2) and a clutch (C3) when the shift position (SP) is in an R (Reverse) position. In a vehicle with the automatic transmission, the shift position (SP) might be in a D (Drive) position as well as in an N (Neutral) position (S110). Even in this case, if the brake (B2) is permitted to be engaged on standby as in the case of the speed of the vehicle (V) being below a threshold (Vref) (S190), then the controller allows the brake (B2) to be engaged on standby (S120). Even when the shift lever is quickly manipulated from the D position to the R position, this allows oil pressure to be applied only to the remaining clutch (C3), thus quickly forming the reverse shift stage. As a result, the mechanical oil pump serving as an oil pressure source can be reduced in size.
