Provided is a converter controller which can easily detect at an early stage, a failure of an auxiliary circuit which constitutes a soft switching converter. The controller turns off a first switching element (S1) and detects a both-end voltage (Vc2) of a snubber capacitor (C2) and a both-end voltage (Vs1) of the first switching element (S1) so as to obtain a differential voltage ΔV.  The controller compares the obtained differential voltage ΔV to a voltage threshold value stored in a memory (not depicted) so as to determine whether the differential voltage ΔV is smaller than the voltage threshold value.  If Yes, the controller determines that the auxiliary circuit (22b) is normal and terminates the process.  If No, the controller determines that the auxiliary circuit (22b) has failed (open trouble) and sets the fail safe operation mode to terminate the process.
