Description:
Priority

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority from U.S. Provisional Patent

Application Ser. No. 62/316, 130, filed on March 31, 2016, which is herein incorporated by reference.

Field

[0002] Inventive subject matter disclosed herein relates to cosmetic applicators and method embodiments for making and using cosmetic applicators.

Background

[0003] Cosmetic applicator technology has focused on size and shape of an applicator to achieve a desired result of cosmetic application. However, size and shape of applicators, such as brush bristles have not prevented problems with cosmetic application, such as application of a cosmetic in an area not intended for application. Products such as peel-off base coat or liquid tape which were first applied on skin area around nails before applying lacquer have been used to capture misapplied cosmetic.

Summary

[0004] Embodiments disclosed herein include an applicator that includes a stem; and an applier attached to the stem, wherein the applier is coated with a material that prevents liquid from adhering to the applier.

[0011] The following detailed description includes references to the accompanying drawings, which form, a part of the detail ed description. The drawings show, by way of illustration, specific embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. These embodiments, which are also referred to herein as "examples," are described in enough detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention. The embodiments may be combined, other embodiments may be utilized, or structural, and logical changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. The following detailed description is, therefore, not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the present invention is defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.

[0012] in this document, the terms "a" or "an" are used to include one or more than one and the term "or" is used to refer to a nonexclusive "or" unless otherwise indicated. In addition, it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein, and not otherwise defined, is for the purpose of description only and not of limitation. Furtliermore, all publications, patents, and patent documents referred to in this document are incorporated by reference herein in their entirety, as though individually incorporated by reference. In the event of inconsistent usages between this document and those documents so incorporated by reference, the usage in the incorporated reference should be considered supplementary to that of this document; for irreconcilable inconsistencies, the usage in this document controls.

[0013] One embodiment disclosed herein includes a brush, as illustrated in one embodiment at 10 in Figure 1 . The brush 10 includes a handle 12 attached to a ferrule 16 that terminates in a heel 18. The term, "stem" as used herein, refers to all of the handle 12, ferule 16 and heel 18. A plurality of bustles 14, defining a belly 20 and a toe 22 are attached to the ferrule 16 at the heel 18. One or more bristles 14 or the plurality is made of or coated with a material that prevents liquid from adhering to or allows liquid to be wiped off easily from the one or more bristles 14. For some embodiments, the entire length of the bristle is made of or coated with the material that prevents liquid from adhering to the bristle or allows liquid to be wiped off easily. For other embodiments, only the tip of the bristle is coated with or formed from, the material that prevents liquid from adhering to the bristle or allows liquid to be wiped off easily from the bristles. For other embodiments, other lengths are coated with or formed from the material that prevents liquid from adhering to the bristle. For some embodiments, the coating of multiple bristles is of a uniform length. For other

embodiments, the coating on multiple bristles with the material that prevents liquid from adhering is not uniform. As used herein, the reference of a "material that prevents liquid from adhering to the bristle," a "material that allows liquid to be wiped off easily," and "impregnating liquid" all refer to the same material. The bristles can be the same or different lengths, can have the same or different diameters, can be made of the same or different materials, or can have the same or different mechanical strength characteristics.

? [0014] A bristle is one type of "applier" as used herein. An applier is an element that transfers a cosmetic such as nail polish or mascara from a container to the user.

[0015] In one embodiment, the heel 18 is also coated with the material that prevents liquid from adhering. In another embodiment, the heel and ferrule are coated with the material that prevents liquid from adhering. In another embodiment, all of the handle 12, ferrule 16 and heel 18 are coated with the material that prevents liquid from adhering. The coating of heel, ferrule and handle aids in controlling the amount of lacquer picked up, and prevents dripping.

[0016] For a mascara brush 100 such as is shown in Fig. 5 or 200 in Fig. 6, a clean stem 104 or 204 prevents smudging of mascara on a nose bridge area of other skin area around the eye of a user and imparts a look that is aesthetically pleasing. Coating the stem 104 or 204 with the coating with the material that prevents liquid from adhering, keeps the stem 104 and 204 clean.

[0017] In one embodiment, the material coating the one or more bristles or another part of the brush, hereinafter, impregnating liquid, is disclosed in US20140314975, hereinafter '975, which is herein incorporated by reference. In some embodiments, the impregnating liquid 120 can include, silicone oil, a perfluorocarbon liquid, halogenated vacuum oil, greases, lubricants, (such as Krytox 1506 or Fromblin 06/6), a fluorinated coolant (e.g., perfluoro-tripentylamine sold as FC-70, manufactured by 3M), a high temperature heat transfer fluid (e.g. Galden HT 200 or Galden FIT 270, Novec fluids, etc.), an ionic liquid, a fluorinated ionic liquid that is immiscible with water, a silicone oil comprising PDMS, a fluorinated silicone oil such as, for example polyfluorosiloxane, or polyorganosiloxanes, a liquid metal, a synthetic oil, a vegetable oil, derivative of a vegetable oil, a mono- di- or triglyceride, an electro-rheological fluid, a magneto-rheological fluid, a ferro-fluid, a dielectric liquid, a hydrocarbon liquid such as mineral oil, polyalphaoiefins (PAO), fluorinated glycine, fluorinated ethers, or other synthetic hydrocarbon co-oligomers, a fluorocarbon liquid, for example, polyphenyl ether (PPE), perfluoropolyether (PFPE), or perfluoroalkanes, a refrigerant, a vacuum oil, a phase-change material, a semi-liquid, polyaikylene glycol, esters of saturated fatty and dibasic acids, poiyurea, grease, syno vial fluid, bodily fluid, or any other aqueous fluid or any other impregnating liquid described herein. In some embodiments, the impregnating liquid 120 can include an ionic liquid. Such ionic impregnating liquids can include, for example, tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene), phenyl isothiocyanate (phenyl mustard oil), bromo benzene, iodobenzene, obromotoluene, alpha-chloronaphthalene, alpha-bromonaphthalene, acetylene tetrabromide, 1 -butyl - 3-metliylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (BMim), tribroniohydrin (1 ,2,3- tribromopropane), tetradecane, cyclohexane, ethylene dibromide, carbon disulfide, bromoform, methylene iodide (diiodomethane), stanolax, Squibb's liquid petrolatum, p-bromotoluene, monobromobenzene, perchloroethylene, MCT oil, carbon disulfide, phenyl mustard oil,
