TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The subject matter described herein concerns a coupling device and a connecting device.

BACKGROUND

[0003] In respiratory protection apparatuses, such as used in fire fighting, in mining, or in industrial facilities, the reliable functioning of the equipment is of great importance.

[0004] In modern respiratory protection apparatuses, not only must the breathing air be brought reliably and securely to the user, but also various pieces of equipment worn by the user must be supplied with electric power and data must be transported. For this, connecting devices are needed with which a secure connection between the connected parts can be made. Since the pneumatic (i.e., generally all lines for breathable gas mixtures) and the electrical/electronic connectors of a respiratory protection apparatus are not similar or attuned to each other, it is not easy to make a secure connection for both. Often it is only possible to make a single secure connection, while the other connection is loose or not even effective.

BRIEF SUMMARY

[0005] In summary, an embodiment includes a coupling device for a first connecting device (21) and a second connecting device (22) for parts of a respiratory protection apparatus, wherein the connecting devices (21, 22) each have coupling elements with a pneumatic connector (1, 2) and an electrical and/or electronic connector (3, 4), which can be connected together in detachable manner, characterized in that on one of the connectors (1, 2) of the first connecting device (21) a first part (11) of a form fitting device for a mating second part (12) of the form fitting device is arranged on one of the connectors (3, 4) of the second connecting device (22), so that a form fitting connection of the two connecting devices (21, 22) is only possible when the two pneumatic connectors (1, 2) and the two electrical and/or electronic connectors (3, 4) are connected together, and that at least one of the parts of the form fitting device (11, 12) terminates flush with the surrounding structural parts.

[0006] Another embodiment provides a coupling device, comprising: a pneumatic connector; an electrical connector; and a restricting element that restricts coupling of a complementary pneumatic connector with the pneumatic connector to a single orientation. [0007] Another embodiment provides a coupling device, comprising: a hose part including both an electrical element and a pneumatic element; a housing at a terminal end of the hose part, the housing including both a pneumatic connector and an electrical connector; the housing including a restricting element that restricts coupling of a complementary pneumatic connector with the pneumatic connector of the housing to a single orientation.

[0008] A further embodiment provides a pneumatic and electrical coupling system, comprising: a first hose part including both an electrical element and a pneumatic element; a first housing at a terminal end of the first hose part, the first housing including both a first pneumatic connector and a first electrical connector; the first housing including a first restricting element; a second hose part including both an electrical element and a pneumatic element; a second housing at a terminal end of the second hose part, the second housing including both a second pneumatic connector and a second electrical connector, each of which is complementary to a respective one of the first pneumatic connector and the first electrical connector; and the second housing including a complementary restriction element that complements the first restriction element; wherein the first restriction element and the complementary restriction element restrict coupling of the first housing and the second housing to a single orientation. [0009] The foregoing is a summary and thus may contain simplifications, generalizations, and omissions of detail; consequently, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the summary is illustrative only and is not intended to be in any way limiting.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0022] It will be readily understood that the components of the embodiments, as generally described and illustrated in the figures herein, may be arranged and designed in a wide variety of different configurations in addition to the described example embodiments. Thus, the following more detailed description of the example

embodiments, as represented in the figures, is not intended to limit the scope of the embodiments, as claimed, but is merely representative of certain example embodiments.

[0023] Reference throughout this specification to "one embodiment" or "an embodiment" (or the like) means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment. Thus, the appearance of the phrases "in one embodiment" or "in an embodiment" or the like in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment.

[0024] Furthermore, the described features, structures, or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. In the following description, numerous specific details are provided to give a thorough understanding of certain embodiments. One skilled in the relevant art will recognize, however, that the various embodiments can be practiced without one or more of the specific details, or with other methods, components, materials, etc. In other instances, well known structures, materials, or operations are not shown or described in detail to avoid obfuscation. The following description is intended only by way of example, and simply illustrates certain example embodiments.

[0025] The goal of the present invention is to create a coupling device in which a connection of pneumatic and electrical and/or electronic line pieces is possible in only one definite form. This is accomplished by using a coupling device with the features of claim 1.

[0026] The coupling device has a first and second connecting device for parts of a respiratory protection apparatus, wherein the connecting devices each have coupling elements with a pneumatic connector and an electrical and/or electronic connector, which can be connected together in detachable manner.

[0027] On one of the connectors of the first connecting device, a first part of a form fitting device for a mating second part of the form fitting device is arranged on one of the connectors of the second connecting device, so that a form fitting connection of the two connecting devices is only possible when the two pneumatic connectors and the two electrical and/or electronic connectors are connected together, and at least one of the parts of the form fitting device terminates at least flush with the surrounding structural parts. The form fitting connection ensures that the complete coupling can only occur in one particular position. Because of the essentially flush arrangement of one part of the form fitting device, projecting parts are prevented from being damaged. Flush means here, in particular, that the part of the form fitting device does not project or stick out beyond the surrounding parts in the mating direction of the connecting devices.

[0028] In one embodiment, the first part of the form fitting connection is arranged on the circumference of the pneumatic connector of the first connecting device and/or in a wall for the electrical and/or electronic connectors of the first connecting device. In another embodiment, the second part of the form fitting connection is arranged on a wall for the electrical and/or electronic connectors of the second connecting device. Since the coupling of the connectors occurs in these regions, it is also advisable to arrange the parts of the form fitting connections in these regions.

[0029] In one embodiment, the first part of the form fitting device for the mating second part of the form fitting device is formed such that the cross sections of the parts that are combined with each other in a connection are rotationally nonsymmetrical, so that a form fitting connection is only possible in one position. In a rotationally

symmetrical formation, e.g., a circular or square cross section of the parts of the form fitting device, there are always several possibilities of making a form fit by connecting the parts. Because the parts are deliberately configured to be rotationally nonsymmetrical, the parts can only be connected in one position.

[0030] For an efficient coupling, in one embodiment the pneumatic connectors and the electrical and/or electronic connectors are assembled in a housing, and the directions of the connectors are oriented in parallel. With this, a compact plug connection can be realized.

[0031] Moreover, in one embodiment the first part of the form fitting connection is formed as at least one groove and the second part of the form fitting connection as at least one pin, at least one locking lug, and/or at least one web. The at least one locking lug, the at least one pin and/or the at least one web is formed on the wall of the electrical and/or electronic connectors of the second hose. By introducing a groove, the rotational symmetry is abolished, so that only one possibility exists for the connecting.

[0032] In one embodiment, the first connecting device has a quick coupling for the first pneumatic connector, while the first part of the form fitting device is arranged in the quick coupling and the quick coupling is coupled with twist prevention. Because of the twist prevention, a particular orientation of the first part of the form fitting element can be achieved, which facilitates the secure coupling. Thus, the twist prevention of the quick coupling can have at least one web and/or a pin, which can be connected in form fit to the groove of the first form fitting device.

[0033] An incorrect coupling can be prevented when the second part of the form fitting device, especially the web, strikes against one part of the connecting devices when the connecting devices are oriented incorrectly, so that no connection of the connectors is possible.

[0034] Moreover, it is possible to arrange the connecting devices on lines for pressure reducers with an electronic module or sensor, on solid tubes, on hose carts, on extension lines, on firmly installed line systems or compressors.

[0035] One possible application of the coupling device is when the connecting devices are arranged at the ends of hoses. Another application is when the hoses and the pneumatic connectors are designed for a medium pressure of the respiratory protection apparatus. [0036] The goal of the present invention is also accomplished by a connecting device with the features of claim 13.

[0037] The connecting device has a pneumatic connector and an electrical and/or electronic connector. Moreover, it has one part of a form fitting device. On the whole, it is formed so that it can be part of the coupling.

[0038] Figure 1 depicts a situation in which two hoses 51, 52 as parts of a respiratory protection apparatus (not shown here) are connected together via a coupling device, while the coupling device has two connecting devices 21, 22.

[0039] The term respiratory protection apparatuses is used here generally to mean also devices such as airline conduits, hose carts or cylinder carts.

[0040] Pneumatic connectors 1, 2 of the connecting devices 21, 22 are securely locked together here, but not the electrical and/or electronic connectors 3, 4. This is a situation which is to be prevented by configurations of a particular coupling device of the present invention.

[0041] Figure 2, on the other hand, shows the correct condition. Here, the pneumatic connectors 1, 2 and the electrical/electronic connectors 3, 4 are securely connected together, so that breathing air (or generally any breathable gas mixture), electrical signals, and power can flow. Furthermore, it is noticeable in Fig. 2 that the electrical lines and air lines are integrated in the hoses 51, 52, while in the region of the coupling the connectors must be spatially separated from each other so that the respective connectors can be connected together correctly.

[0042] Moreover, it can be seen in Fig. 1 and 2 that the connecting devices 21, 22 are each arranged in housings 31, 32.

[0043] In what follows, the way to make the connection is described with the aid of embodiments of the coupling device. The connecting devices 21, 22 are each arranged in a housing 31, 32, as is shown in Fig. 2, for example.

[0044] Figure 3 shows a sectional view of the second connecting device 22, which has the second pneumatic connector 2 and the second electrical/electronic connector 4. The electrical and pneumatic lines are brought together in the hose 52, while the lines are arranged spatially separated in the region of the actual connectors 2, 4. The pneumatic connector 2 and the electrical/electronic connector 4 are arranged parallel here, so that a correspondingly complementary connecting device 21 can be connected to them; the connection direction is indicated as V. In the correctly connected state, the position according to Fig. 2 is achieved.

[0045] In an embodiment, the second connecting device 22 according to Fig. 3 is outfitted with a second part of a form fitting device 12, which cooperates with a correspondingly complementary shaped part of a form fitting device 11 of the first connecting device 21 (see Fig. 5 and Fig. 6), i.e., to make a form fit. [0046] The second part of the form fitting device 12 is formed here as an elongated web, which is arranged on a wall 13 of the second electrical/electronic connector 4. The web 12 is arranged on the lower side of the wall 13 and does not stick out in the connection direction V (pointing to the left in the plane of the drawing) beyond surrounding structural parts; it terminates at least flush with the surrounding structural parts. Thus, the web 12 as a form fitting device cannot be so easily broken off. The web 12 can be molded as a single piece on the wall 13, since the wall 13 is generally made of plastic. Here, the flush arrangement means that the web 12 does not project beyond the wall 13 in the connection direction V.

[0047] Figure 4 shows a front view of part of the second connecting device 22, namely, the part of the electrical and/or electronic connector 4. In this view, the web 12 is recognizable on the lower side of the wall 13.

[0048] Figure 5 shows an embodiment for the first connecting device 21, which corresponds to the second connecting device 22 shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4; it is complementary to them. The first connecting device 21 is connected to the first hose 51, in which the electrical and pneumatic lines likewise run parallel.

[0049] The first connecting device 21 also has a pneumatic connector 1 and an electrical/electronic connector 2.

[0050] As part of the form fitting device, a groove 11 is made on the

circumference of a quick coupling 14 of the pneumatic connector 1, whose shape corresponds to the shape of the web 12 on the electrical and/or electronic connector 4 of the second connecting device 22. Figure 5 shows the groove 11 in the quick coupling 14 of the pneumatic connector in a front view.

[0051] Only when the web 12 is inserted precisely into the groove 11 can the second and first connecting device 22 and 21 be properly coupled together.

[0052] In a wrong orientation of web 12 and groove 11, web 12 strikes against the end face of the first pneumatic connector 1 , so that no coupling of the pneumatic and electrical/electronic connectors 1, 2, 3, and 4 can occur.

[0053] The web 12 here is formed as an elongated rib, while the lengthwise dimension of the web 12 is collinear with the connection direction V. In other embodiments, the second part of the form fitting device 22 can be shaped differently, e.g., as a pin or locking lug for engagement with the groove 11.

[0054] Yet another optional detail is shown in Fig. 5 and 6.

[0055] The groove 11 extends over the entire length of the quick coupling 14, and when assembled the web 12 of the second connecting device 22 only extends around halfway into the groove 11.

[0056] The first connecting device 21, for its part, is provided with a web 15 underneath the first electrical and/or electronic connector 1 , which extends into the groove 11, i.e., from the opposite direction to the inserting of the web 12 of the first connecting device 21 into the groove 11. [0057] The web 15 of the first connecting device 21 serves to prevent a twisting of the naturally rotational quick coupling 14. In this way, the groove 11 is automatically oriented so that the web 12 of the second connecting device 22 can be easily coupled with the groove 11.

[0058] The embodiment shown here has been described with the aid of hose couplings. Essentially, the coupling device can also be used with other units. Thus, a first connecting device 21 can be firmly connected to a base (for example, in an apparatus or a piece of equipment of a person), and then a hose line with a second connecting device 22 can be coupled to it.

[0059] Neither is the coupling device confined to the use of the hoses 51 and 52 described here. Instead, the hoses 51 and 52 with the pneumatic and electrical lines can also run separate from each other, for example, or be otherwise integrated.

[0060] The form fitting devices 11 and 12 has here a groove 11 and a web 12, which can be connected together in form fit. Alternatively, other configurations can also be chosen - for example, locking lugs or pins 12 for engaging in a groove 11 - which prevent an incorrect orientation of the connecting devices.

[0061] The form fitting devices 11 and 12 shown here also have only one groove 11 and only one web 12; however, more than one groove 11 and one web 12 can also be used. [0062] Figure 7 shows a perspective representation of a coupling device according to Fig. 2. In detail A (see Fig. 7A), one recognizes the web 12 of the second part of the form fitting connecting device 21, as it engages in the groove 11 of the first part of the form fitting connecting device 22. The groove and web connection abolishes the rotational symmetry, so that a connection of the form fitting connecting devices 21 and 22 are only possible in this one position.

[0063] Figure 8 shows a sectional view through the embodiment of Fig. 7. In the detail view A in Fig. 8 A, the cooperation of groove 11 and web 12 is illustrated. As already explained above, the first connecting device 21 in this embodiment is outfitted with a web 15, in order to prevent a twisting of the quick coupling 15 of the first pneumatic connector.

[0064] Figure 9 shows a schematic front view of the first connecting device 21, in which the electrical connector 3 is arranged on top and the pneumatic connector 1 underneath. If the pneumatic connector 1 is encircled by a rotationally nonsymmetrical peripheral surface 16 (essentially an interrupted annular surface), a corresponding connector can only result in a connection when the necessary position for the secure connection of the pneumatic and electrical connectors 1, 2, 3, 4 is precisely occupied. Wrong connections are not allowed by the asymmetry. [0065] This disclosure has been presented for purposes of illustration and description but is not intended to be exhaustive or limiting. Many modifications and variations will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art. The embodiments were chosen and described in order to explain principles and practical application, and to enable others of ordinary skill in the art to understand the disclosure for various embodiments with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated.
