Description:

Cover for a Book

Technical Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to a cover for a book and in particular to a cover for a book incorporating a calculator whereby the calculator can be conveniently used while the book is in use.

Background of the Invention

When performing book keeping tasks or mathematical work it is common to use an electronic calculator. At the same time, it is often necessary to write down the results of the calculations in a notebook. Because the calculator and notebook are frequently used together it is advantageous to combine the two separate articles into a single product.

GB 2 224 239 and GB 2 387 811 disclose notebooks having an electronic calculator incorporated into the front cover of the notebook. The calculator is

exposed for use when the front cover of the book is opened. However, once the pages of the notebook have been turned past the first page, the calculator is obscured, such that the pages of the book interfere with the use of the calculator.

It is desirable to provide a book incorporating a calculator wherein the calculator does not interfere with the normal use of the book and vice versa.

Summary of the Invention

According to the present invention there is provided a cover for a book, the cover comprising a front panel connected to a spine by a first fold line at a first side edge of the spine, a rear panel connected to the spine by a second fold line at a second side edge of the spine, a closure flap connected to the rear panel by a third fold line at an outside edge thereof, said first, second and third fold lines preferably being parallel to one another, the closure flap being moveable between an open position and a closed position, a calculator being mounted in or on the closure flap whereby the calculator is exposed for use when the closure flap is in its open position, said closure flap overlaying at least a portion of the front panel to hold the cover shut when the closure flap is in its closed position.

Preferably fastening means are provided for holding the closure flap in its closed position against the

front panel. In one embodiment the fastening means comprises one or more magnetic members mounted on or in the front cover and one or more corresponding magnetic members mounted on or in the cover flap, the magnetic members being appropriately polarised or magnetised so that they attract each other when the closure flap is in its closed position. In an alternative embodiment the fastening means comprise hook means of a hook and loop fastener mounted on one of the front cover or the closure flap and corresponding loop means of the hook and loop fastener mounted on the other of the front cover or closure flap.

Preferably the closure flap comprises a first portion extending from the third fold line to a fourth fold line, said fourth fold line extending parallel to said third fold line, and a second portion extending from the fourth fold line to a distal side edge of the closure flap. A support panel may be mounted on an inner surface of said second portion of the closure flap, said support panel having a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the calculator, said support panel having an aperture, the calculator being located within the aperture, co- planar with the support panel.

Preferably the first portion of the closure flap has a width substantially equal to the sum of the width of the spine and the thickness of the support panel to permit the second portion of the closure flap to

lie parallel to the front panel of the cover when the closure flap is in its closed position.

Brief Description of the Drawings

An embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :-

Fig 1 is a perspective view of a book having a cover according to an embodiment of the present invention with the cover closed;

Fig 2 is a perspective view the book of Fig. 1 with the cover open;

Fig 3 is an exploded view of the cover of Fig. 1.

Detailed Description

With reference to the drawings, there is shown one embodiment of the present invention. The book 1 comprises a cover 2, which may be formed from a single sheet of card, a plurality of pages 4 being mounted to a spine 6 of the cover 2. The cover has a front panel 8 and a rear panel 10, the front panel 8 being connected to the spine 6 by a first fold line 12 and the rear panel being connected to the spine 6 by a second fold line 14, the first and second fold lines 12,14 being parallel to one another, as is conventional in book binding.

The cover 2 also includes a closure flap 18, connected to a side edge of the rear panel 10 by a third fold line 16, the third fold line 16 being parallel to the first and second fold lines 12,14. Mounted on the closure flap 18 is an electronic calculator 5, as will be described in more detail below. The electronic calculator may be of any suitable type, either solar and/or battery powered and is preferably of a type having a relatively small thickness and with buttons not extending substantially above the upper surface of the body of the calculator.

The closure flap 18 comprises a first portion 20 extending from the third fold line 16 to a fourth fold line 24, and a second portion extending from the fourth fold line 24 to a distal side edge of the closure flap 18. The fourth fold line 24 extending parallel to the first, second and third fold lines 12,14,24.

As best shown in Fig. 3, a support panel 26 is adhesively mounted on an inner surface of said second portion 22 of the closure flap 18. The support panel 26 has a central aperture 27 within which is located the electronic calculator 5. The support panel 26 has a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the calculator 5, such that the calculator lies within the support panel 26, co-planar therewith, such that the support panel 26 effectively provides a

frame around the calculator 5. The calculator 5 may be secured to the surface of the closure flap by means of a suitable adhesive or may be releasably mounted within the aperture 27 by means of suitable releasable fastening means .

The first portion 20 of the closure flap 18 has a width substantially equal to the sum of the width of the spine 6 and the thickness of the support panel 26 to permit the second portion 22 of the closure flap 18 to lie parallel to the front panel 8 of the cover 2 when the closure flap 18 is in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 1.

In order to hold the closure flap 18 in its closed position as shown in Fig. 1, fastening means are provided in the form of magnets 28,30 mounted in corresponding positions on the closure flap 18 and on the outer surface of the support panel 26, the magnets 28,30 being appropriately polarised or magnetised so that they attract each other when the closure flap 18 is in its closed position to hold the closure flap 18 against the front panel 8. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) , hook and loop fastening means or other suitable releasable fastening means may be used in place of the magnets 28,30.

As can be seen from Fig. 1, when the closure flap 18 is in its closed position, the calculator 5 is held between the front panel 8 and the second portion 22

of the closure flap 18 and is thus protected against damaged, while the closure flap 18 and the fastening means 28,30 hold the cover closed, thus protecting the pages 4 of the book 1.

In the open position, shown in Fig. 2, the calculator is exposed for use to one side of the pages 4 of the book 1 and the pages 4 of the book 1 can be turned and written upon without interfering with the use of the calculator 5.
