The theoretical efficiency of the modern reciprocating piston engine is virtually halved on account of various losses caused by the detrimental working movement of the piston. The invention relates to an engine having more convenient piston movement. The power and compression strokes are four times faster with known engines operating at the same engine speed. Consequently, the heat losses of the engine are reduced. The gas exchange period is 1.5 times longer. In an engine with a jerk-action crank mechanism, see Fig. 1, the piston (2) is coupled to the engine crank (5) by pin (4), connecting rod (3) and link rod (7). The connecting-rod/link-rod linkage element (3-7) is guided in a circular path by the jerk-action crankshaft (6) counter to the direction of rotation of the engine crankshaft. As compared with an analogous conventional engine, an engine with a jerk-action crank mechanism has greater efficiency and performance. In a spark-ignition design where ε = 10:1, the efficiency is 60-87% greater and the peak performance is 2.26-2.63 times greater; in a diesel design where ε = 22:1, the efficiency is 47-64% greater and the peak performance is 2.07-2.31 times greater. The CO2 emissions decrease in proportion with consumption, whereas the NOx emissions are reduced to a disproportionately large extent: by 10 to 15 times.
