Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a cushioning device which can absorb a shock of a normal magnitude and also can absorb a shock of an extremely large magnitude, is compact, and requires a small mounting area on a vehicle. [Solution] A cushioning device (3) for a railway vehicle comprises a cylinder body (8), a piston (10) which is provided in the cylinder body (8) so as to be movable forward and backward, and a viscous fluid (11) which is sealed within the cylinder body (8). The cylinder body (8) comprises a first cylinder (6) which has one end open and a second cylinder (7) which has one end open and which is fitted over the opening of the first cylinder (6) with a predetermined fit tolerance in such a manner that the openings are liquid-tightly closed. The piston rod (18) of the piston (10) is inserted from the first cylinder (6) side, and a predetermined gap (22) is formed between the piston head (21) and the inner peripheral surface of the first cylinder (6).
