This cutting insert is provided with an polygonal plate-shaped insert main body (11) having two polygonal surfaces (12), a side surface (13) in which a flank (14) is formed, and a cutting edge (15) formed in an intersecting ridge line portion of a rake face and the flank (14), wherein: the insert main body (11) has a rotationally symmetrical shape with respect to an insert centerline (L) and has a front-rear inversion symmetrical shape with respect to the polygonal surfaces (12); the cutting edge (15) is provided with a corner blade (15a) and a main cutting edge (15b) extending from one end of the corner blade (15a), and a wiper blade (15c) extending from one end of the main cutting edge (15b) in a direction intersecting the main cutting edge (15b) at an obtuse angle; and a first region in which a relief angle of the flank (14) in a cross section along the insert centerline (L) gradually decreases in a continuous manner from a positive angle through 0° to a negative angle with increasing distance from the wiper blade (15c) to one end side of the corner blade (15a) is provided in a zone extending from the wiper blade (15c) to the main cutting edge (15b), toward said one end side of the corner blade (15a).
