A damping device having enhanced damping performance achieved without increasing its size to a level that is greater than the size of conventional devices. The damping device has a fixed outer tube (10, 107), a rotation inner tube (20, 109) rotatably received in the hollow of the fixed tube (10, 107) and forming a circular tube-like action chamber (50) together with the peripheral wall (11) of the fixed outer tube (10, 107), a screw rod (30, 106) having a helical screw groove formed in its outer peripheral surface, a screw nut (40, 108) engaged with the screw rod (30, 106) and fixed to the rotation inner tube (20, 109), and viscous fluid sealed in the circular tube-like action chamber (50). The fixed outer tube (10, 107) has a partition wall (12) for closing one end of the hollow, and the rotation inner tube (20, 109) has a bottom plate (21) facing the partition wall (12) of the fixed outer tube (10, 107). Between the partition wall (12) of the fixed outer tube (10, 107) and the bottom plate (21) of the rotation inner tube (20, 109) is formed a circular disc-like action chamber (51) continuing from the circular tube-like action chamber (50), and the viscous liquid is sealed in the circular disc-like action chamber (51).
