Abstract:
In this data compression method, a data string is compressed in units of symbols which are each data of fixed length. Subsequently, a conversion table that registers therein entries each indicating association between two or more symbols prior to conversion and one symbol subsequent to conversion is searched for. When it is determined that two or more consecutive symbols in a data string are not registered as two or more symbols prior to conversion, an entry in which the two or more consecutive symbols are set as two or more symbols prior to conversion is registered in the conversion table and the two or more consecutive symbols are outputted without conversion. When it is determined that two or more consecutive symbols in a data string are registered as two or more symbols prior to conversion in an entry in the conversion table, the two or more consecutive symbols are converted to one symbol subsequent to conversion which is associated with the two or more symbols in the entry.
