Abstract:
The objective is to impart a delay time to a modulated optical signal quickly and very precisely. The delay interferometer is equipped with a prism unit having a first prism and a second prism. In addition, the delay interferometer varies the optical path length of a first branched light beam that passes through the first prism by maintaining the angle of incidence of the first branched light beam with respect to the incident surface of the first prism, while the first prism is moved in a direction toward or away from the second prism. Thus, the delay interferometer can impart a delay time to a modulated optical signal quickly and very precisely, merely by appropriate selection of the apex angle of the first prism, even when the amount of mechanical movement of the first prism is imprecise.
