A device (100) for assisting the heart in the event of heart failure, the device comprising: a catheter (32); a drive shaft (34) arranged in the catheter (32) in a penetrating manner; and a pump (36) which can be delivered to a desired location in the heart via the catheter (32) to pump blood. The pump comprises: a pump housing (363) connected to a distal end of the catheter (32) and having an inlet end (361) and an outlet end (362), and an impeller accommodated in the pump housing (363), wherein the impeller is driven by the drive shaft (34) to draw blood into the pump housing (363) from the inlet end (361) and discharge same from the outlet end (362); and the pump housing (363) and the impeller are configured such that the pump (36) is in a compressed state when in an interventional configuration to enable the pump (36), which is within a first outer diameter, to be delivered to the vascular system of a subject, and the pump (36) is in a deployed state when in an operating configuration to enable the pump (36), which is within a second outer diameter that is greater than the first outer diameter, to pump blood to a desired location. The performance of the device (100) can thus be significantly improved.
