Title:
DEVICE FOR THE FITTING OF WEATHER STRIPS, MAINLY IN RABBETS OF WINDOW SILLS AND WINDOW FRAMES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1995/008035
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The device, meant for fitting strips with detachable protective paper in the rabbet of window panes and sills, consists mainly of a cylinder (12), a steering tube (11), a moveable unit (1), an activating unit (5), two knives (4 and 19), and a steady pivot (20). In order to fit a strip, this is led through the device, and the detachable protective paper is separated from the strip. The moveable steering unit (1) is now put against the side of the object, and the device is placed on the rabbet of the object. Pull the protective paper, and move the device forward. Now the weather strip will be applied on to the object parallel to the edge of the object, until the moveable steering unit (1) touches the corner of the frame. Now the strip is partly cut across by knife Nr. 1 (4), by a pressure of the cylinder (12). Then the device is now turned at right angles to the fitted strip, the steady pivot meanwhile ensuring the egde of shape of the strip, and allowing sufficient strip to be applied in the angular corner. The next step is to pull the protective paper, once again, for further fitting. When finished, the activating unit (5) is pressed, thus activating knife Nr. 2 (19), then the cylinder (12) for cutting off totally the strip at the end of fitting.

Description:
Device for the Fitting of Weather Strips, Mainly in Rabbets of Window Sills and Window Frames.

This invention regards a munual device for fitting weather strips with datachable protective paper in the rabbets of window sills or window frames, before installing single- or thermoglass window panes. This device mainly consists of a cylinder which is partly fitted over a steering tube, the dimension of which facilitates the fitting of weather strips by - among other things, - a moveable steering unit, an activating unit, two knives, and a steady pivot, thus enabling unimpeded performance in one, so that the above mentioned weather strip can be installed in rabbets, and in angular corners of rabbets.

Devices up till now for fitting of the previously mentioned weather strips are: German Patent nr. 26 55 290 Swiss Patent nr. 536.778

The overall problem of these devices is that because of their dimentions they are unhandy to use, and the fitting of weather strips can not take place without major interruptions when installing the weather strips in window rabbets.

An obvious drawback of all known devices is the lack of a steering unit, the two knives, and a steady pivot.

Furthermore they apply quite a different way of putting forward the strips.

This invention, however, provides a fitting device, as described initially, the kind and dimension of which enables a considerably time saving manual process of work.

When using this device, the weather strip is pused forward upon the subject, which also results in less wastage later on. By this method a better an longer lasting closeness is obtained, due to the steering unit, the steady pivot and knife nr. 1, which enables fitting in angular corners of the rabbets.

In principle, this device allows to leave out totally the armament of stretch reducing weather strips, resulting in a considerable retrenchment in recourses and a much lower production price of the weather strips.

When installing the weather strip, this is led through the device, and the detachable protective paper is automatically seperated from the strip. The moveable steering unit (1) is put upon the side of the object and the device is placed on the rabbet. You now pull the protective paper while moving the device forward, and at the same time the weather strip is fitted to the sill parallel to the edge of the frame until the moveable steering unit (1) touches the corner of the sill, and the strip is now partly cut across by knife nr. 1 (4) by a pressure from the cylinder (12). The device is now turned at right angles to the already fitted strip. At the same time the steady pivot (20) ensures the edge of the shape of the strip and furthermore sees to it that sufficient strip is applied in the angular corner. Now the protective paper can be pulled once more for further fitting. When initial fitting is reached again, the activating unit (5) is pressed to activate knife nr. 2 (19). Then on the cylinder (12) in order to obtain total shortening of the strip to complete fitting.

The device is constructed in such a way that the lower mounted moveable steering unit ensures the parallel fitting in the rabbet, and sees to it that the cutting point of the strip takes place in such a way - in relation to knife nr. 1, meant for fitting at corners., - that a further fitting can take place without stretching the weather strip unnecessarily. It is, furthermore, moveable to ensure the function of the steady pivot when working at installing the strip in corners.

In front of the moveable steering unit a steady pivot is placed resulting in keeping the shape of the strip, and ensuring that sufficient weather strip is applied at the fitting af corners.

Two shortening knives have been fitted inside the steering tube. One of these knives is rather small so that the strip is only cut half through at the fitting of corners. The other knife cuts the strip fully at the end of fitting.

The various parts of this invention will be explained in the following, referring to the drawing, where figure A shows the device in sectional view, and figure B showing the device from the front.

Figures A and B show the device in sectional view and from in front, showing at the top the cylinder (12) partly pushed down over the steering tube. (11). At the very top inside the cylinder (12) a spring (16) is mounted, ensuring that the cylinder (12) and knife nr. 1 (4) as well as a screw (14) fitted further down the cylinder, are all kept in place. Under the spring (16) at the top inside the steering tube (11) to one side there is another spring (17) holding back knife nr. 2 (19) to "knife stop" (21) which is placed at the other side of the steering tube ( 11 ) . On the cylinder (12) an activating unit (5) is mounted. By pressing this (5) and the cylinder (12) knife nr. 2 (19) is activated at the end of the fitting process. The activating unit (5) is being held in place by a spring (15). In the lower part of the cylinder (12) a feeding ring is mounted ensuring the strip not to wind during feeding (13) in the steering tube (11), or causing trouble during the fitting.

At about the midle of the steering tube (11) there is a milling ( 13 ) at the introduction through which the weather strip will pass.

At the bottom of the milling (13) a roll is mounted ensuring the feeding of the strip into the steering tube (11) in a frictionless manner, and at the same time pressed firmly against the object during the fitting. On the other side of the steering tube (11) you will find, according to the drawing, a notch (6) starting at the upper part of the milling, whose function it is to quide the strip through the steering tube (11). At the bottom on one side of the notch ( 6 ) , there is a steady pivot (20) keeping the shape of the edge of the strip intact, and ensuring sufficient strip in the angular corners when working at the fitting here.

At the other side, at the bottom of the notch (6) a roll is fitted to ensure that the protective paper ( 10) can smoothly be detached from the list during fitting. At the rear, in the same side as the steady pivot (20) is the maveable steering unit ( 1 ) which enables a parallel fitting of the strip in the rabbet. In connection with the function af the steady pivot (20) and knife nr. 1 (4) this ensures correct fitting in the corners. If necessary the moveable steering unit(l) may be ajustable in the direction af the arrow (22), as shown on fig. B. in accordance with the use of weather strips of various width, and different mountings of strips on the objects in question.
