Abstract:
The present invention comprises: a crank angle sensor 4 for outputting crank angle signals for which a plurality of reference positions are set in advance in accordance with the rotation of a crankshaft 2; a cam sensor 5 for outputting a plurality of cam signal pulses in accordance with the rotation of an intake cam shaft 3 for opening and closing an engine valve; an electric motor 6 for causing the intake cam shaft 3 to rotate relative to the crankshaft 2 and altering the rotational phase angle of the intake cam shaft 3 relative to the crankshaft 2; and an electronic control device 7 for computing the actual rotational phase angle of the intake cam shaft 3 on the basis of the cam signal pulse first directed after cranking has started and the first reference position of the crank signal detected thereafter, and thereby calculating the absolute position of a variable valve timing mechanism 14.
