DEVICE AND METHOD FOR SELECTING PRECEDING VEHICLE

A preceding vehicle is accurately selected by estimating courses of a user’s own vehicle and a forward vehicle, the selection being made accurately even when the preceding vehicle enters a curve, leaves a curve, or changes lanes. To achieve this, a preceding vehicle-selecting device has an own-vehicle behavior-measuring function for measuring the behavior of a user’s own vehicle, an own-vehicle course-estimating function for estimating the course of the user’s own vehicle based on the own vehicle’s behavior measured by the own-vehicle behavior-measuring function, and a forward-vehicle position- measuring function for measuring the position of at least one forward vehicle. The position of the user’s own vehicle after predetermined time is estimated, and when the distance between the estimated position of the user’s own vehicle and a forward vehicle is less than a predetermined value, the forward vehicle is selected as the preceding vehicle. When some forward vehicle is selected as the preceding vehicle, the predetermined value of distance is set greater than values set when a preceding vehicle is not selected.
