The present invention relates to a device and a method for sensing operations of piano keys in a contactless type. The device for sensing operations comprises: multiple IR sensors for sensing spacing distances regarding piano keys assuming that directions of extension of the multiple piano keys are forward/backward directions, respectively; and a mounting plate on which the multiple IR sensors are mounted. The multiple IR sensors are classified into IR sensor groups disposed in multiple rows to be spaced apart from respective piano keys in the forward/backward directions. Each of the IR sensor groups is configured such that, during an operation for pressing each piano key corresponding thereto, same functions as a unit for sensing the spacing distance thereof. The sensing device calculates a key movement rate by using a difference in height between two IR sensors selected from a single IR sensor group, and a difference between times at which a reference spacing distance is reached during a piano key pressing operation, and deems the key movement rate as a piano key pressing intensity. Accordingly, regardless of nonlinear response characteristics of individual IR sensors, excellent measurement precision regarding key pressing intensities can be implemented, and initial settings can be easily made regardless of the degree of proficiency of the operator.
