Description:
DEVICE FOR PREVENTION OF INFORMATION COPYING FROM MAGNETIC STRIPS OF CARDS USED IN AUTOMATIC TELLER MACHINES

TECHNICAL FIELD

This invention is related to the device that disturbs the working principle of skimming (copier) apparatus used to receive users' information for cloning cards with magnetic stripe in automatic teller machines, particularly where cards with magnetic stripe are used, and preventing the healthy receiving of data by fraudsters and preventing copying of cards with magnetic stripe. THE PRESENT STATE OF THE ART

Today the users prefer to do financial transactions on automatic teller machines, both inside and outside of the bank branches, instead of the counters inside of the bank branches, parallel to the developing technology. In that case, they are able to do transactions faster, as well as doing transactions on the automatic teller machine device of the banks that are close to their zone, at any time required.

Since in this case, the circulation of money and transaction over the automatic teller machines increased, it has become the most important source for fraudsters.

Today, these fraudsters emerge in several ways. The most common and most used of these, is the use of card skimming apparatus manufactured in accordance with the input of the card reader of the automatic teller machine, that can record by analog or digital method. These apparatuses have been designed such that, they cannot be easily distinguished in terms of card users. Therefore, these people do not realize that they are victims of fraud at that moment. This fraud is made by copying the user's information that is held on the magnetic stripe of the card, at the time of inserting or removing the card during the transactions of people, by an additional skimming apparatus, mounted at the front of the input slot of the card reader of the automatic teller machine, and it is completed by taking the pin number, by the help of password sensors placed on the keypad or a small camera that is also placed by the fraudsters on the automatic teller machine.

Withdrawal of cash from the account of the victim can be easily made by using automatic teller machines and by the creation of copy of the card by means of the acquisition of transactions of skimming the card data and identification of the pin number.

Today, some methods have been developed against the cards being copied. One of them is the method of detection of foreign objects attached from the outside of the automatic teller machine. This method fails to function very well and does not give a positive result in terms of the process of detection.

Another method is the method of detecting the expenditure of the copied card and blocking the account by the bank's software. Despite this situation preventing the fraud, it also limits and stops the possibilities of usage by users in some situations. In fact, this method prevents withdrawal and processing facilities by blocking the cards of all of the users, processing at the specified automatic teller machine, where it is estimated that skimming operations are being made by this method.

Furthermore, skimming of the user information is intended to be prevented by moving the card in vibration (jittering), at the input and output of the card on automatic teller machine. However, , because users pull out the card as soon as the card is seen in rejection process, the return of the vibrating card (jittering) cannot be made and card skimming apparatus operates and information of the card may be copied easily. Furthermore, another method used in the automatic teller machines is the condition of the physical theft of the cards. In this method, the card is being jammed by a special apparatus and the cardholder thinks that the card is withheld by the automatic teller machine and is persuaded to leave the card. Then, this jammed card is taken out along with the apparatus and used for fraud.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

This invention was developed, in order to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned in the present state of the art.

With this invention, the recording property of the copying apparatus in this field is impaired, by creating an inductive field and healthy reading of the data is prevented. Therefore, the information that is necessary to produce copy card cannot be obtained.

With this invention, data disruptive signal emitting, feedback controlled and button protected antenna, will be activated only by inserting and removing the card with magnetic stripe, to the card reader device of the automatic teller machine, in other cases (when the card is processed in the card reader of the automatic teller machine or in the waiting position of the card reader of the automatic teller machine without making any transactions) will prevent the continuity of the signal without working; energy consumption will be less, and the life of the device will be extended. In this way, the deterioration of the card reader parts of the automatic teller machine will be cancelled due to the signal continuity will be prevented.

The continuous service requirement is caused by false alarms created by surface scanning systems used in the existing technology. Compared to the current technology, in this invention the distorting signal is generated in the implementation of the copying process of the copying apparatus and getting the data properly by the card skimming apparatus connected to the automatic teller machine is prevented due to the effective inductive field produced by this signal. Therefore, the cost of the service is decreased and running time of the automatic teller machine is protected. stripe Against the interruption of method of hampering the data theft by vibrating (jittering) because of rush of users, the device averts copying of skimming apparatus and protects all insert and reject processes by means of created inductive field.

By the help of this invention, against the theft of bank card by jamming, the software in the device detects that the mechanism at the inlet of the card reader of the automatic teller machine is left open, in other words the card did not enter within the safe area in the card reader or was not taken back by the client, and the device enters into the error position, at the end of a period of time determined by of the bank, and the card cuts the power to the reader. In this case, the automatic teller machine enters to the out of service position and provides transmission of the error signal to the center as a failure of the card reader, depending on the features of the automatic teller machine. This situation gives rise to the need for service and the bank becomes aware of fraud case.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

This invention is the device (11) used in automatic teller machines, to prevent copying of the information on the cards with magnetic stripe, and two types of feed are used on the electronic control unit (4). The processor (8) circuit is fed with +5 V; the amplifier (9) is fed with +24 V. The device (11) which works with the control of one processor (8), controls the amplifier driver (9), relay (7), the reference end from the card reader (12) of the automatic teller machine, and most important the time-out function, in case of jamming of an object to the inlet of the card reader (12) of the automatic teller machine with this processor (8). With this time-out function, if the inlet of the card reader (12) of the automatic teller machine remains open, because of external jammed/compressed objects, the processor detects it as danger, takes the device (11) to the fault condition, cuts the power of the card reader ( 2) of the automatic teller machine, and the takes the automatic teller machine out of service. This is a kind of security measure to protect cards of the customers and to prevent damage to the feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10) by heating up, due to excessive working. The device (11) which is the subject of the invention, prevents analog or digital recording of the different types of the magnetic stripe copier apparatus (13) in a healthy way, attached to the outer surface of the card reader (12) input slot of the automatic teller machine by fraudsters, by means of the creation of inductive field in a specific region by the feedback controlled and the button protected antenna (10), producing variable signals for the symmetrical amplified amplifier (9) circuit of the processor (8) located in the device (11), when inserting and rejecting the customer cards in the card reader of (12) the automatic teller machine.

The subject invention prevents the creation of any card skimming condition, when the device ( 1) which is the subject of the invention is not operational, by stopping the operation of the card reader (12) unit, thus the automatic teller machine and the operation of the automatic teller machine by cutting off the power of the automatic teller machine for any reason (such as malfunction of the electronic control unit, disconnection of the feedback-controlled and button- protected antenna (10), etc.).

Supply voltage of the card reader (12) is transmitted to the card reader (12) by passing through a relay (7) on the electronic control unit (4) of the device (11). In other words if the device (11) does not work, card reader of the automatic teller machine (12) also will not work. The electronic control unit (4) is placed between the bottom cover (1) of the box and the top cover (2) of the box and fixed by the mounting screws (3). Passages of Feedback connections of the feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10) reference terminal, power supply connections , through the side covers (5) are provided with appropriate connectors.

The system begins to operate during insertion or rejection of the card with magnetic stripe into the card reader (12) unit of the automatic teller machine. It is determined that the card is at the opening of the card reader (12), in other words on the inserting and removing position of the card, by reference to the one of the appropriate switches, determining inserting and removing the card on the card reader (12). In the meantime, the device (11) produces variable signals at different sizes, required for the amplified amplifier (9) circuit, through the feedback controlled and button-protected antenna (10). These signals have amplitudes and frequencies (between 1-5 kHz), to prevent taking the user data contained on the magnetic strip of the card, regardless of the speed of inserting and removing the card. It produces itself a disturbing inductive field, to cover the foreseen lower and upper limits, according to the bandwidth of the data to be copied from the magnetic stripe, with the amplitude and frequency produced. This field provides the distortion of the data imported by the malicious persons, by attaching false apparatus (with the features of analog/digital copying) to copy the data, such that they cannot be corrected even by the editor programs used in the computers. These signals are amplified to cover an area at the desired level, in the amplifier

(9) of the electronic control unit (4). These generated and amplified signals are broadcasted in a way that the signals will affect the insertion slot of the card reader (12), even that the feedback controlled and button protected antenna

(10) which is designed according to the model of the automatic teller machine is positioned towards the inlet of card reader that the most effective area for skimming. Negative pressure on the card reader (12) of the automatic teller machine is also mitigated, by the most appropriate feedback controlled and pushbutton protected antenna (10), to the physical structure of the card entry slot of the automatic teller machine and by positioning. Card input and output control software of the device (11) is organized in two ways (direct and inverse operated) according to the working principle of the opening and closing switches that controls the card entry at the entrance of the card readers (12) of the automatic teller machine for different models. This control software that controls the on/off position, provides the start or termination of the signal emission of the feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10), by opening and closing the initially closed switch via the reference cable of which the device (11) prepared according to this model, as the user inserts the card to the automatic teller machine. As the change of the current position is detected, the circuit starts to work and the work stops within a few seconds by returning to the old state. In the meantime, the customer card enters to the card reader (12) and passes to the secured section, by getting rid of the dangerous section, where it can be copied. Meanwhile, the card reader (12) makes the normal operation and the system will keep silent and remain in standby mode in the meantime. At the moment the usage of the magnetic card ends and the card is rejected from the reader (12), the position of the reference switch changes again and the device (11) will begin to run and keep running, as it stays in this position. It will continue to work for a few seconds more, from the moment the customer takes the card from the card reader (12). At the end of this time of a few seconds, the device (10) returns to the standby position again. Thus, all of the areas and times for fraudsters card skimming is protected. Feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10) can be in the form of (I) bar shape, (L) shape or the (U) shape, according to the surface of application and the need. If necessary, more than one feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10) can be used and the power, in other words, the impact domain of the feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10) can be adjusted from the electronic control unit (4).

If desired, status information of the device (11) can be remotely monitored with an interface connection to the device (11) or the operations such as installation of software to the processor (8) part of the device (11) can be performed. The operation status of the device (11) can be followed by indicators with colors and lights on it, simple and understandable by anyone. Green lamp indicates that the device (11) is powered, in other words operational, yellow lamp indicates the moments that the feedback controlled and button protected antenna (10) is activated and the red lamp indicates the status of the malfunction. If the red lamp lights up the power to the automatic teller machine's card reader (12) is cut and card reader (12) is not working. Scanning of the front surface of the automatic teller machine, which is a risky area, can be made by adding the object recognition or detection of ultrasonic properties (as a detector), in addition to the protection property of the device (11). Feedback control and button protected antenna (10), in other words coil, in some models of the device (11) is connected to the electronic control unit through a micro switch (4), due to the safety of assembly and other security reasons.

When the micro switch is opened due to fall, movement or trying to dismantle the feedback controlled and the button protected antenna (10), or when the cable of the feedback-controlled and protected button antenna (10) is disconnected or broken, the device (11) cuts off the power of the card reader (12) of the automatic teller machine and stops running completely, until it returns to its old position, in the cases of failure in its own system of the device (11) due to external factors. The bottom cover (1), the top cover (2) and side covers (5) of the present invention, provide protection of the control stage (6), the relay (7), the processor (8) and the amplifier (9).

The lower cover (1) of the subject invention is the place where the electronic control unit (4) is fixed and the attachment bands that allows the securing of the device (11) to a suitable surface in the automatic teller machine is located. The side covers in the subject invention (5) contain connectors of the cables.

The upper cover (2) in the subject invention includes the holes of the status indicator LED. The relay (7) in the subject invention controls the power to the card reader.

The power stage (6) in the subject invention decreases the power voltage of 24 V from the automatic teller machine to the device (11) to 5 V for the operation of the control and oscillator stage of the processor (8).

The cables (14) included in the subject invention are three types, namely feedback controlled and button protected antenna (11), the reference and power cables (14), and they are of the structure with coal-rings for protecting cables (14) against the currents on them and protecting the systems in the environment against the broadcastings from the cable (14).
