Abstract:
The invention provides for a device for removably abutting objects, said device including a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects, a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non-rotational manner and means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects. The invention also provides for a kit.

Claims

1. A device for removably abutting objects, said device including; a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects; a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non-rotational manner; and means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects.

2. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 1, wherein the device includes two plugs.

3. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 2, wherein the device includes a plurality of plugs.

4. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the plugs are of different dimensions.

5. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the plugs are tapered.

6. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the plug is shaped and dimensioned to receive and hold the shank and thereby removably hold the abutted objects in a desired position.

7. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein any one or more of the plugs include an adhesive.

8. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 7, wherein the adhesive facilitates a more permanent abutment between the objects.

9. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any claims one of claims 7 to 8, wherein the adhesive used with one or more of the plugs and the shank

alleviates the need for clamping the objects when a more permanent abutment of the objects is desired.

10. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the plug is made of any suitable material.

11. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 10, wherein the plug is manufactured from a plastics material and/or wood and/or composite material.

12. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes at least one tapered end.

13. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank is tapered at both ends.

14. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a substantially smooth portion along at least a part of its long axis.

15. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes grooves along at least a part of its long axis.

16. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 17, wherein the grooves are shaped and dimensioned to engage the plug and/or the object.

17. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a thread along at least a part of the long axis.

18. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 19, wherein the thread is shaped and dimensioned to engage any one or more of the plug or the object.

19. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a combination of any one more of a substantially smooth portion, tapered grooves thread and/or a bolt thread.

20. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a head for receiving a screwdriver.

21. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a tapered head for receiving a screwdriver.

22. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the head of the shank is the shape and form of a male head configured to receive a female type screwdriver.

23. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the head of the shank is the shape and form of a female head configured to receive a male type screwdriver.

24. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a hexagonal head which is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a suitably shaped screwdriver.

25. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the shank includes a Phillips head.

26. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the shank includes at least one flat head.

27. A kit for removably abutting objects, said kit including; a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects; a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non-rotational manner;

means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects; and a screwdriver for removing the shank from the aperture.

28. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 27, wherein the device includes two plugs.

29. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 28, wherein the device includes a plurality of plugs.

30. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

29, wherein the plugs are of different dimensions.

31. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

30, wherein the plugs are tapered.

32. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

31 , wherein the plug is shaped and dimensioned to receive and hold the shank and thereby removably hold the abutted objects in a desired position.

33. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the 27 to 32, wherein any one or more of the plugs include an adhesive.

34. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 33, wherein the adhesive facilitates a more permanent abutment between the objects.

35. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any claims one of claims 33 to 34, wherein the adhesive used with one or more of the plugs and the shank alleviates the need for clamping the objects when a more permanent abutment of the objects is desired.

36. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any of the claims 27 to 35, wherein the plug is made of any suitable material.

37. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 38, wherein the plug is manufactured from a plastics material and/or wood and/or composite material.

38. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any of the claims 27 to 37, wherein the shank includes at least one tapered end.

39. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to 38, wherein the shank is tapered at both ends.

44. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in claim 43, wherein the thread is shaped and dimensioned to engage any one or more of the plug or the object.

44, wherein the shank includes a combination of any one more of a substantially smooth portion, tapered grooves or a thread.

46. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

45, wherein the shank includes a head for receiving a screwdriver.

47. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

46, wherein the shank includes a tapered head for receiving a screwdriver.

47, wherein the head of the shank is the shape and form of a male head configured to receive a female type screwdriver.

50. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

49, wherein the shank includes a hexagonal head which is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a suitably shaped screwdriver.

51. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

50, wherein the shank includes a Phillips head.

52. A device for removably abutting objects as claimed in any one of the claims 27 to

51 , wherein the shank includes at least one flat head.

53. A kit for removably abutting objects, said kit including; a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects; a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non-rotational manner; means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects; and a screwdriver head that is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a screwdriver and/ or power tool thereby to adapt the screwdriver or power tool to receive a male head of the shank.

54. A kit as claimed in claim 53, wherein the abutment of the objects are of a permanent nature.

55. A new device for removably abutting objects substantially as herein described and illustrated.

Description:

A device for removably abutting objects.

Description

The inventor is aware of the existence of various devices for abutting objects. These devices have shortcomings in that the aesthetic quality of the abutment is often less than optimal and the devices do not form satisfactory abutment between the objects. Furthermore, these devices do. not allow for the easy detachment of the objects, should the need arise and are difficult or complicated to operate.

The inventor believes that a need exists for an abutting device that forms a secure attachment between two or more objects, whilst being aesthetically pleasing to the eye when in its attached state. The inventor also believes that a need exists for an abutting device which allows for two or more objects to be released, should the need arise.

The inventor also believes that a need exists for a device that facilitates a relatively easier abutment of objects and is not complicated to use.

Summary of the invention

According to an aspect of the invention, there is provided a device for removably abutting objects, said device including; a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects; a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein, the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non- rotational manner; and means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects.

The device may include two plugs.

The device may include a plurality of plugs.

The plugs may be of different dimensions.

One or more of the plugs may be tapered.

The plug may be shaped and dimensioned to receive and hold the shank and thereby removably hold the abutted objects in a desired position.

One or more of the plugs may include an adhesive.

The adhesive may facilitate a more permanent abutment between the objects.

It is to be appreciated from the specification that the use of an adhesive with one or more of the plugs and shank may alleviate the need for clamping the objects when a more permanent abutment of the objects is desired.

The plug may be manufactured from any suitable material.

The plug may be manufactured from a plastics material and/or wood and/or composite material.

The shank may include at least one tapered end.

The shank may be tapered at both ends.

The shank may include a substantially smooth portion along at least a part of its long axis.

The shank may include tapered grooves along at least a part of its long axis.

The tapered grooves may be shaped and dimensioned to engage the plug and/or the object.

The shank may include a thread along at least a part of the long axis.

The thread may be shaped and dimensioned to engage the plug and/or the object.

The shank may include a combination of any one or more of a substantially smooth portion and/or tapered grooves and /or a thread.

The shank may include a bolt thread.

The device may include shanks of varying lengths to accord the specific needs of the user.

The device may include shanks of varying diameter to accord to the needs of the user.

The shank may include a head for receiving a screwdriver.

The head of the shank may be in the shape and form of a male head configured to receive a female type screwdriver.

The head of the shank may be in the shape and form of a female head configured to receive a male type screwdriver.

The shank may include a hexagonal head which is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a hexagonal female screwdriver head, the screwdriver head being shaped and dimensioned to receive the hexagonal shank.

The shank may include a Phillips head.

The shank may include at least one flat head end.

The shank may include flat end heads at both ends.

The screwdriver may be used on the head of the shank to remove the shank from the object.

According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit for removably abutting objects, said kit including; a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects; a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non- rotational manner; means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects; and a screwdriver for removing the shank from the aperture.

The kit may include two plugs.

The kit may include a plurality of plugs.

The plugs may be of different dimensions.

One or more of the plugs may be tapered.

The plug may be shaped and dimensioned to receive and hold the shank and thereby removably hold the abutted objects in a desired position.

One or more of the plugs may include an adhesive.

The adhesive may facilitate a more permanent abutment between the objects.

It is to be appreciated from the specification that the use of an adhesive with one or more of the plugs and shank may alleviate the need for clamping the objects when a more permanent abutment of the objects is desired. The plug may be manufactured from any suitable material.

The shank may include at least one tapered end.

The shank may be tapered at both ends.

The shank may include a combination of any one or more of a substantially smooth portion and/or tapered grooves and /or a thread.

The kit may include shanks of varying lengths to accord the specific needs of the user.

The kit may include shanks of varying diameter to accord to the specific needs of the user.

The shank may include a head for receiving a screwdriver.

The shank may include a tapered head for receiving a screwdriver.

The head of the shank may be in the shape and form of a male head configured to receive a female type screwdriver.

The head of the shank may be in the shape and form of a female head configured to receive a male type screwdriver.

The shank may include a hexagonal head which is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a hexagonal female screwdriver head, the screwdriver head being shaped and dimensioned to receive the hexagonal shank.

The shank may include a Phillips head.

The shank may include at least one flat head end.

The shank may include flat end heads at both ends.

The screwdriver may be used on the head of the shank to remove the shank from the object.

According to yet another aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit for removably abutting objects, said kit including; a plug receivable by at least one aperture defined by the objects; a shank, shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one of the apertures defined by the objects and wherein the shank is received into the apertures and plugs in a non- rotational manner; means for discouraging the unintentional separation of the abutted objects; and

a screwdriver head that is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a screwdriver and/ or power tool thereby to adapt the screwdriver or power tool to receive a male head of the shank.

It is to be appreciated from this specification that the abutment of the objects may be of a permanent nature.

It is also to be appreciated from this specification that the device may be used with mortices, biscuits, dowels and the like.

Detailed description of drawings

The invention will now be described by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;

Figure 1 is a drawing of a partial cross-sectional view of the device;

Figure 2 shows a particular embodiment of the shank of the device;

Figure 3 -9 are drawings of further embodiment's of the shank and the head of the invention;

Figure 10 shows detail of the head of a particular embodiment of the shank;

Figure 11 is a drawing of a screwdriver forming part of a kit; and

Figure 12 is a diagrammatic representation of a detachable screwdriver head for adapting a screwdriver or power tool to receive the male head of the shank.

Figure 13-24 are drawings of further embodiments of the shank and the head.

In the drawings, reference to numeral 10 generally refers to a device in accordance with the invention.

A device 10 for removably abutting objects 18 that includes a shank 14, which is shaped and dimensioned to be receivable by at least one aperture 15 defined by the objects 18. The shank 14 is received into the apertures 15 and the plugs 12 in a non-rotational manner.

It is to be appreciated from the specification that the shank 14 of the device 10 has different embodiments as shown in Figures 2- 9. Figure 2 shows a particular embodiment of the shank 14 that includes tapered ends 16 receivable by the plugs 12 and a substantially smooth portion along its long axis 17.

In further embodiments shown in Figures 3 - 6, 16, 20, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23 and 24 the shank 14 includes a tapered groove 20 portion along a part or the whole of its long axis 17. The tapered grooves 20 shown in Figures 5 and 6 are helical.

Figure 7, 15, 19, 20 and 23 show embodiments of the shank 14, where the shank 14 includes a thread 22.

Figure 8, 9, 15, 19, 20 and 23 are drawings of embodiments that have combinations of tapered grooves 20 and thread 22.

The tapered end 16 of the embodiments of the shank 14 shown in Figures 6 to 24 include a male head 24 which is configured to receive a female screwdriver head 26 for facilitating the removal of the shank 14 from the object 18.

Figure 10 shows an end view and a side view of one of the embodiments of the male head 24 of the shank 14.

The screwdriver 30 having a female head 26 is shown in Figure 11.

The detachable screwdriver head 32 depicted in Figure 12, is shaped and dimensioned to be received by a screwdriver (not shown) or power tool (not shown) thereby to adapt the screwdriver or power tool to receive the male head 24 of the shank 14.

The shank 14 can include further embodiments of the invention as shown in figures 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 18, 21, 22 and 23. The further embodiments include a hexagonal head 36 of

the shank 14, which is receivable by a screwdriver (not shown) configured to receive the hexagonal head 36 of the shank 14.

A further embodiment of the invention includes a Phillips-type head 38 of the shank 14, as shown in 6, 7 and Figure 24.

The shank 14 also includes a flat end head 40 of the shank 14 as embodied in figures 6, 7, 16, 17, 19 and 20.

Yet further embodiments shown in figures 13 and 18 are representations of a device 10 including a bolt thread 42.

The inventor believes that the present invention has the advantage permitting the abutment of two or more objects in an aesthetically pleasing manner whilst still providing a secure abutment. The inventor believes that a further advantage of the invention is that minimal effort is needed to abut the objects and the objects may be displaced if needs be.

The inventor also believes that a need exists for a device that facilitates the more permanent abutment of objects whilst minimising the need for clamps, dowels or mortises.
