This diamond single crystal includes nitrogen atoms. The concentration of the nitrogen atoms changes periodically along the crystal orientation of the diamond single crystal. The arithmetic mean value Aave, the maximum value Amax, and the minimum value Amin of the distance of one period along the crystal orientation satisfy the relationship of formula (I): (Amax)/1.25≤(Aave)≤(Amin)/0.75
