Abstract:
Provided is a diesel engine for a ship in which an engine body can be operated under more favorable conditions. This diesel engine has: an engine body; a supercharger; an EGR system; an engine control device that controls the driving of the engine body, and controls the action of an exhaust valve in a combustion cycle on the basis of an exhaust valve closing timing pattern in which the timing of closing the exhaust valve comes later as the speed of the engine body increases; and an EGR control device. The exhaust valve closing timing pattern is such that the timing at which an operating condition of the engine body is a threshold value condition and the exhaust valve is closed while the EGR system is running is earlier than the timing at which the operating condition of the engine body is a threshold value condition and the exhaust valve is closed while the EGR system has stopped.
