Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a diesel engine that can be smoothly started even in a situation where a plunger has become difficult to rotate due to sticking of the plunger that is caused by a fuel film formed on the outer periphery of the plunger. When a key switch (80) is operated from an off-position to an on-position, a control unit (70) of this diesel engine (1) controls an actuator (48) so as to causes a rack (45) to perform a predetermined operation (X). If the rack (45) cannot complete the predetermined operation (X) within a predetermined amount of time (Ta), on condition that the key switch (80) is held at a start-position, the control unit controls a starter (60) so as to causes a plunger (34) to perform a preparatory stroke operation whereby the plunger (34) is caused to perform a stroke operation, and the stroke operation by the plunger (34) is stopped before the diesel engine (1) starts.
