Abstract:
Provided is a diesel engine capable of both reducing cooling loss and improving mixing properties between a fuel spray mist and air by increasing the flowability of air inside a cavity without increasing the penetration of the fuel spray mist. This diesel engine (1) comprises: a cylinder head (6) that covers an end of a cylinder (2); a piston (10) that includes a crown surface (10a) in opposition to the cylinder head and that reciprocates inside the cylinder; and a fuel injection valve (34) attached to the cylinder head. The cylinder head has air intake ports (18, 20) formed so as to create a swirl flow inside the cylinder. In the crown surface of the piston are formed: a cavity (12) that is recessed toward the opposite side from the cylinder head and that is circular in a planar view; and cut-out parts (64) recessed from the circumferential edge of the cavity toward the outer side in the radial direction of the piston. The fuel injection valve has formed therein an injection hole (56) oriented toward the inside of the cavity.
