Abstract:
Provided is a diesel engine comprising: a cylinder (12); a cylinder head (14); a fuel injection valve (17); and a piston (13). The piston (13) includes: a cavity (30) that is recessed so as to be capable of receiving fuel injected from the fuel injection valve (17) when the piston is positioned at top dead center; and a notch (40) formed by recessing a portion of the peripheral edge of an opening of the cavity (30) toward the outer side in the radial direction. The notch (40) is inclined toward the inner side in the radial direction at an angle of 0° to 50° relative to the center axis of the cylinder (12a) from a piston crown surface (13a) toward an inner peripheral wall surface (30a).
