The purpose of the present invention is to provide a diesel engine that can prevent fuel spray from reaching a low-temperature cylinder head surface or cylinder liner surface before fuel combustion has ended, and that can reduce cooling loss. A diesel engine (1) includes: a cylinder head (6) that covers one end of a cylinder (2); a piston (10) that is provided with a crown surface (10a) which faces the cylinder head, and that reciprocates in the cylinder; and a fuel-injection valve (34) that is attached to the cylinder head. The piston crown-surface has formed therein: a cavity (12) that is circular in plan view and that is recessed toward the side opposite the cylinder head; and grooves (64) that are recessed from the circumferential edge of the cavity toward the radial direction outer-side of the piston. The grooves extend so as to be inclined in the circumferential direction of the piston, from a bottom-edge section (64a) on the side opposite the cylinder head towards a top-edge section (64b) on the cylinder-head side. The fuel-injection valve has formed therein an injection hole (56) which is directed to the grooves.
